Arsenal applauded by rivals for hidden Mikel Arteta message after furious VAR reaction | Football | Sport

Arsenal hid a dreaded “vote of confidence” in Mikel Arteta within their statement backing his rant against the VAR decisions at Newcastle. Concerned board members and senior executives decided overnight on Saturday that it was wrong to leave the Gunners’ boss as the lone voice questioning the validity of Newcastle’s goal in the 1-0 win – along with a number of other marginal decisions.
With the first rumblings of pressure falling on the Spaniard’s shoulders after nearly four years in charge, the VAR issue was seen as the ideal way to show the continued solidarity Arteta has with the club as a whole.
A late draw against Chelsea disguised how Arsenal had been outplayed for much of the match at the Emirates and defeat against another Champions League rival Newcastle so soon after Arsenal were dumped out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday has put an unwanted spotlight on how Arteta will deal with a rare down-turn in results.
The frustration of having three very tight decisions in the build up to Newcastle’s goal all go against his side – whether the ball went out of play, the possibility of a foul and a question of offside – led to some strong language from Arteta. In various post-match interviews he used words such as “not acceptable”, “embarrassing”, “a disgrace”.
In the cold light of day, those in the background at the north London club were concerned at the social media noise emanating from Arteta’s robust comments. And with results on the field going against the team this week, they wanted to ensure Arteta did not look like an isolated figure.
More important than the specifics of the VAR calls in question, this was an opportunity for the club to show backing for their manager at the first suggestion of a downturn in fortunes. Luckily, there is an undercurrent of more worthy causes against the way the new technology is being implemented which such a message taps into.
Liverpool’s entirely justifiable concerns about their treatment at Spurs led the way and an earlier apology from Howard Webb to Wolves about a penalty incident involving United goalkeeper Andre Onana. This was on top of 10 letters of apology that were written the previous season by Webb’s predecessor Mike Riley.
Newcastle’s goal against Arsenal may have been anything but the perfect example, but it is clear something needs to be done to improve the implementation of VAR throughout the Premier League. So Arsenal have been applauded behind the scenes by other Premier League clubs for taking a stance. At the Emirates, though, undoubtedly the main concern is to keep their manager feeling supported and loved – and no amount of social media abuse is going to knock that off the top of the agenda.

PGA Tour make major announcement as Rory McIlroy’s absence addressed | Golf | Sport

The golfing world has continued to turn following Rory McIlroy’s dramatic defence of his Masters crown. Having waited so long to complete the Grand Slam, the Northern Irish star now boasts two Green Jackets and six major titles to his name.
His next major target is the PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club, near Philadelphia, getting underway on May 14. Another strong contender at the second major of the year will be Matt Fitzpatrick, who continued his superb season by beating Scottie Scheffler in a play-off to win the RBC Heritage last weekend. Fitzpatrick returns to action this week, teaming up with his brother, Alex, at the Zurich Classic. Here’s a round-up of the latest golf news…
McIlroy skips another event
McIlroy has extended his post-Masters break by sitting out the Zurich Classic, which gets underway on Thursday. McIlroy, who also skipped the RBC Heritage, won the team event alongside close friend Shane Lowry in 2024 and competed again last year shortly after claiming the Green Jacket for the first time.
However, he will be absent from this year’s tournament in New Orleans, with Lowry instead pairing up with PGA Tour returnee Brooks Koepka. Defending champions Ben Griffin and Adam Novak and the Fitzpatrick brothers will also feature in a field that includes a number of lesser-known emerging talents.
Novak has defended the calibre of the field, saying: “You may not know some of the names in this tournament yet, but you will. There’s some kids playing in this tournament that you better get to learn their names sooner rather than later.”

No regrets for MacIntyre
Robert MacIntyre has set out his ambitions for the season following his Masters meltdown. The left-hander was caught on camera aiming a middle-finger gesture at the 15th green after sending his approach shot into a pond on his way to a quadruple-bogey nine.
The Ryder Cup hero was reprimanded by Augusta National officials at the end of his opening-round 80. MacIntyre carded a 71 in round two but, at seven over, missed the cut and then declined to speak to the press before heading home.
The Scot, who recently became a father, has since opened up about his aspirations for the season but has no intention of reining in his fiery nature. MacIntyre is firmly focused on sharpening his iron play and, beyond major glory, is targeting victory at the Scottish Open and a place at the PGA Tour Finals.
However, the 29-year-old has few regrets about his outburst in Augusta. MacIntyre told the BBC: “It’s part of who I am. I try, I probably should limit it or I should try and maybe wait a couple of seconds longer before I do have my outburst. But for me to try to compete at the top level, I need to get my frustration out or else it’s going to affect my performance.”

PGA Tour event to be dropped
The PGA Tour is set to abandon its Hawaii events for the first time in 63 years. This year’s season opener, The Sentry in Maui, was called off due to drought issues.
No alternative venue could be secured, meaning the season got underway with the Sony Open at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu. The Sentry and the Sony Open are traditionally paired together, but the PGA Tour is weighing up a move of the latter to the seniors’ Champions Tour alongside the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai.
Meanwhile, Sentry Insurance could assume sponsorship of the event at Torrey Pines, near San Diego, which is poised to become the new season opener.

Chelsea can appoint five managers this week to rescue season after Liam Rosenior disaster | Football | Sport

It was an appointment that felt strange at the time and has transpired to be just that ever since. Rosenior’s sacking feels inevitable, but who can Chelsea turn to next? Express Sport have picked out five names who could be brought in to try and fix the current situation.
A former Chelsea player, but not one that too many people will remember. Felipe Luis spent one season at Stamford Bridge (the 2014/15 league-winning campaign), but since retiring, he’s enjoyed a successful start to management in Brazil. So much so, despite an average of one trophy every 14 games across his spell as Flamengo manager, the Brazilian outfit sacked him for reportedly speaking to Chelsea about the vacant managerial position following Enzo Maresca’s departure.
It’s over two months since Oliver Glanser announced his imminent departure from Crystal Palace, but we’re still none the wiser as to where he’s going next. Chelsea wouldn’t have been on his radar when making that decision, but what if it might be now? The Austrian might be the straight talker the west Londoners need to fix their current plight. It could be tough to prise him away from Palace’s European journey, however.
Another member of Chelsea’s 2014/15 title-winning side, and another to have taken the managerial world by storm. Cesc Fabregas has Como on the brink of European qualification, having excelled with the Serie A side since taking over. The Spaniard has been linked with big jobs across the continent, but what about a return to a place where he’s already loved by the fans? He’d certainly have the supporters onside from the off, which isn’t necessarily something you could’ve said about Rosenior.
At least he wouldn’t have to move far! Marco Silva has done a splendid job at Chelsea’s local rivals, Fulham, but he’s another manager being tipped to make the step up to a ‘bigger’ club in the near future. The Portuguese tactician has certainly shown he’s adept at getting the most out of a squad, so perhaps he’s one to look at.
Third time lucky? Frank Lampard’s managerial stock is perhaps the highest it’s ever been after guiding Coventry City to the Championship title. His first spell at Chelsea ended in a sacking, while he returned for a few matches towards the end of the 2022/23 season on an interim basis. Maybe the stars are aligning for yet another return…

Chelsea owners hold emergency meeting after Liam Rosenior sack decision | Football | Sport

Chelsea’s owners have reportedly called an emergency meeting to discuss Liam Rosenior’s position as manager following a fifth straight Premier League defeat. It’s 114 years since Chelsea last lost five league matches in a row, with suggestions that Rosenior’s position might be under scrutiny starting to grow.
The latest in the growing list of defeats came away to Brighton, where the Blues were put to the sword and shipped three goals without return. It came after losses to both Manchester clubs, Everton, and Newcastle, with Chelsea now looking as if they could miss out on European football altogether.
It’s reported by talkSPORT that the ongoing slump has forced Chelsea’s board into holding an emergency meeting, despite having originally planned to review his position at the end of next season. The bigwigs are said to be discussing a plan of action, and could sanction an exit earlier than initially expected.
Rosenior had boldly stated that the Chelsea board have put their full trust in him as manager, insisting there were no concerns surrounding an untimely sacking. Speaking before the Brighton loss, the ex-Strasbourg manager explained: “100 per cent. They’ve been supportive of me in our daily conversations. We are aligned, knowing we need to win games of football now.”
However, given they’ve stooped to even further lows in the Premier League, the board could be forced into a swift U-turn on the sack decision. Next on the agenda for Chelsea is an FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United at Wembley, with the winner set to place either Manchester City or Southampton in the final.
Rosenior cut a much more downbeat figure following the 3-0 thumping away to Brighton, with the English coach admitting he was ‘numbed’ by the result. He remarked: “I have my own ideas. I am not here to make excuses. That was unacceptable from everyone involved with me at the head of it. That needs to change.
“It is accountability. I have defended the players at times when it was the correct thing, but I can’t defend that performance. It doesn’t represent this football club, it doesn’t represent anything I ask from the group, and that has to change. I feel numb, I’m so angry. I always speak on what I see and that was unacceptable. The goals we conceded were unacceptable, and that is something I have to hold my hands up to.”
Before concluding: “I will look at the team, will look at individuals, and I will look at a team I can trust to do the basics of football, and we should not be talking about the basics of football at this level. It is something we have to adjust very quickly.”
