Arsenal player ratings vs Real Madrid: 10/10 given as Gunners progress to semi-finals | Football | Sport

Arsenal have reached the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2009 with a 2-1 victory at Real Madrid. After winning the first-leg 3-0, the Gunners were expected to be under siege at the Bernabeu, but the onslaught never materialised.
It was a tale of two penalties in the first half. Bukayo Saka wasted a glorious early opportunity for Arsenal when his ‘Panenka’ was saved by Thibaut Courthois. Real were then awarded a spot kick of their own after Kylian Mbappe went down after contact from Declan Rice, but it was overruled on VAR.
Saka made ammends with a superb lifted finish after the break. An error from William Saliba allowed Vincius Jnr to level matters on the night, but the visitors were comfortable before Gabriel Martinelli broke clear in the dying seconds and slotted home.
Express Sport brings you the player ratings for Mikel Arteta‘s side as their European dream continues…
Arsenal player ratings vs Real Madrid (4-3-3)
David Raya: 7
Would not have expected to have walked down the tunnel at half-time having not had to make a save. Barely tested after the break either and could do little about the Vinicius Jr goal. Kept his cool when collecting crosses and denied Brahim Diaz in injury time.
Jurrien Timber: 9
A night where he came of age in an Arsenal shirt. Refused to give an inch to Vinicius Jr and at one point thwarted the Brazilian superbly in the first half as he broke into the area. Wasn’t afraid to get forward either.
William Saliba: 8
Outstanding until his uncharacteristic error. Had the better of Kylian Mbappe and frequently dispossessed his international teammate. Commanding in the air too and on a night when Arsenal needed composure, he was the rock that provided assurance. Except for the glaring mistake that is.
Jakub Kiwior: 8
Like Timber, stood up to what was thrown at him and blocked a series of Real crosses.
Myles Lewis-Skelly: 7
Continues to look at home on the big stage. Not afraid to surge forward although one run was halted cynically by Antonio Rudiger, who was fortunate officials didn’t take a closer look at his stamp on the teenager.
Thomas Partey: 8
Proved his fitness after a knock against Brentford and it was crucial he did. A crunching tackle on Jude Bellingham in the first-half summarised his overall display – combatitive and clinical. Only blotted his copybook with a needless late booking that leaves him suspended for the first leg against PSG.
Martin Odegaard: 6
Work rate was excellent as ever but the final product was lacking in attack. Often ran down blind alleys and was outshone by Rice, but was involved in the build-up to the goal.
Declan Rice: 10
Colossal over both legs. Had the better of England teammate Jude Bellingham, denying him brilliantly with one cover tackle in the second period. Constantly broke up Real attacks and just as influential on the ball. Courtois also struggled with his inswinging corners.
Bukayo Saka: 8
What were you thinking Bukayo? In the end, it didn’t matter. Tormented David Alaba throughout and wasn’t fazed about being fouled. Made up for the penalty miss with his cool second-half finish.
Mikel Merino: 8
Another influential display by the Spaniard. Won the penalty, linked well with Odegaard and Rice and it was his through ball that created the goal for Saka.
Gabriel Martinelli: 7
Had two second half chances on his left foot. Was too hesitant with the first and then forced a low save out of Courtois with the opportunity that followed. Put in a commendable shift though and made no mistake when going clean through in injury time.
Subs:
Leandro Trossard (for Saka, 77): 6
Little time to influence the outcome.
Kieran Tierney (for Martinelli, 95): N/A
Ben White (for Timber, 95) N/A
Oleksandr Zinchenko (for Rice, 95): N/A

Tennis LIVE: Emma Raducanu romance rumours swirl as Andy Murray takes on brand new role | Tennis | Sport

Stefanos Tsitsipas has admitted that his relationship with dad Apostolos became ‘toxic’ while he was still part of his coaching set-up.
The pair went their separate ways last year, and Tsitsipas insists the decision has made a positive impact on their family dynamic.
“Our relationship has actually gotten better over the last couple of months,” he said. “It was very hard and difficult in the beginning when we split. It was very hard for him to accept that he’s not part of my inner circle anymore.
“It reached a point before where tennis got too much in the way. And, as bad as it sounds, I think it became even toxic in a way because I felt like he was constantly hunting.
“He’s still my father and he’s still someone that remains dear and close to me. He’s an amazing person in my life, because he’s done so many sacrifices, and he’s done so much work.”

Transfer news LIVE: Man Utd miss out on leading target as medical scheduled | Football | Sport

Wydad Casablanca president Hicham Ait-Menna has revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo rejected a transfer ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.
The Al-Nassr striker received multiple offers for summer moves so that he could feature in the first edition of FIFA’s revamped tournament.
And Wydad Casablanca have emerged as one of the clubs that tried an audacious swoop for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
“I don’t know how the rumour spread,” Ait-Menna explained.
“But yes, I did reach out to one of his agents about three-and-a-half or four months ago, asking: ‘Would he want to play the Club World Cup?’ He replied, ‘Listen, I don’t think so.’”

Rory McIlroy launches club down fairway in disgust as US Open nightmare worsens | Golf | Sport

Rory McIlroy‘s anger boiled over after completely miscuing his second shot at Oakmont Country Club’s monster par-five 12th on Friday. The Northern Irishman was fighting to get back on the right side of the cut line at the supremely difficult host venue for this year’s US Open, but he could not slip into a productive rhythm and became increasingly frustrated as his second round wore on.
McIlroy has been on a worrying run of form since winning the Career Grand Slam and ending his long major drought at the Masters in April. He finished 14 shots behind winner Scottie Scheffler at the PGA Championship in May, missed the cut at the Canadian Open last week, and brought those struggles with him to Pennsylvania for the year’s third major.
The 36-year-old left himself with work to do after carding an four-over-par opening-round 74 on Thursday. And things continued to trend downward as he approached his second shot on the 647-yard 12th hole on Friday.
By that point, McIlroy had slipped to +8 – one shot behind the projected cut line at the time. He spied an inviting opportunity to get at least one shot back after leaving himself in position with a perfect tee shot.
As McIlroy stood over his second shot, Sky Sports commentator Paul McGinley said: “Has Rory got something special here? A big, high fade is what’s required to access this pin over on the back right-hand side.”
But what McIlroy delivered was the exact opposite as his long iron hooked violently to the left, landing in Oakmont’s notoriously thick rough. The five-time major winner only held his follow-through for a split second before furiously launching the club down the fairway.
And just like that, the opportunity to pull level with the projected cut line turned into a chance missed as McIlroy walked off with a par.
By that point in his round, McIlroy had slipped 11 shots behind joint-leaders J. J. Spaun and Sam Burns, and the chances of winning his second major of the season were all but gone.
When the last group of the day were through eight holes, only five players in the 156-strong field were under par for the tournament, and no bogey-free stars remained. Backmarker George Duangmanee showed just how brutal the course can be by racking up a huge score of +35 by the end of his first two rounds.
