Bangladesh: The Birth And Struggles Of A Young Nation | Insight | Full Episode

Five decades ago on the 7th of March, leader of the Awami League, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared the independence of Bangladesh, then known as East Pakistan. The proclamation led to a brutal crackdown by the Pakistani army on the people of Bangladesh. 3 million people were killed as Asia’s new nation emerged into an uncertain future through mayhem and war.

50 years after its birth, Bangladesh has now emerged as one of the fastest growing economy in the world, overtaking even its closest neighbours, Pakistan and India.

But is the nation still haunted by its traumatic past? Has it fulfilled a part of Sheikh Mujibur’s dreams of a democratic, peaceful and exploitation-free society called “Sonar Bangla” or Golden Bengal? Or has the price of independence been too high for the country to bear?

A draft Pentagon report reveals China has deployed over 100 ICBMs across new silo fields, signalling a major nuclear escalation. With warheads expected to top 1,000 by 2030, the U.S. warns this could spark a new arms race alongside Russia. Beijing insists it follows a no-first-use policy and minimum deterrence, but the Pentagon remains unconvinced, linking this build-up to Taiwan war plans. As the New START treaty nears expiry, a binding global arms control framework may collapse — raising fears of a multi-front nuclear race. What’s China’s real endgame? Is deterrence enough, or is escalation inevitable?
