Chelsea news: Mauricio Pochettino takes dig at Nicolas Jackson after Forest defeat | Football | Sport

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino appeared to make a dig at forward Nicolas Jackson after the Blues fell to a shock 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest. There has been plenty of hype about the Senegal international following his summer transfer from Villarreal but his wastefulness in the final third against Forest cost Chelsea all three points.
Chelsea had a number of notable chances and several of those fell to Jackson – not least a glorious opening to pull the Blues level in the second half that was spurned over the bar.
Pochettino wants his forward players to be more ruthless if they’re to pick up the results they desire.
He said: “Today, we created chances. We were not clinical enough in the last third. We should score if we want to win, make one mistake and concede.”
Jackson caught the eye in pre-season during the Premier League Summer Series when he displayed frightening pace and confident finishing.
But despite glimmers of promise, Jackson has failed to hit the ground running in the Premier League despite netting his first Chelsea goal in the 3-0 win over Luton.
Chelsea are still yet to sign a first-team striker under Todd Boehly despite spending over £1billion and that decision could now come back to haunt them.
Christopher Nkunku will be missing until December with a knee injury and his absence means there will be extra pressure on the shoulders of young Jackson and Raheem Sterling.
Pochettino added: “In this type of game, I think it would help us to be more mature and to feel the competition.
“It is not enough to have quality but you need to compete in a different way to match their aggression, energy and desire.”
Chelsea have now picked up just one win from their opening four top-flight matches.
The Blues had put together back-to-back victories in all competitions following the 2-1 EFL Cup win over AFC Wimbledon but Nottingham Forest made things difficult for the Blues on a sobering afternoon at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea fan Paul Merson covered the game on Gillette Soccer Saturday and has since tweeted: “Chelsea could play till Monday and wouldn’t score.”
Mykhaylo Mudryk came off the bench but couldn’t spark a second-half fightback while Noni Madueke and Ian Maatsen were also brought into the fray to try and turn the contest around.
The Blues now travel to Bournemouth after the international break but there will be plenty for Pochettino to digest and analyse before the trip to the Vitality Stadium.
Chelsea are hoping to welcome a number of first-team players back to full fitness after the international break.
The list of absentees includes Armando Broja, Trevoh Chalobah, captain Reece James, Romeo Lavia and defender Benoit Badiashile.

Snooker star joins Ronnie O’Sullivan in seeking home away from UK | Other | Sport

Snooker star Hossein Vafaei looks primed to set up a new home in Hong Kong after being granted residency by its government. The Iranian ace has thanked the authorities for their decision as he follows the sport’s other stars away from the United Kingdom.
Seven-time world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan has settled in Hong Kong and Dubai in recent years and the Rocket revealed his family’s decision to leave their home in Chigwell, in part, came down to its convenience for the tournament circuit. O’Sullivan made the move with his wife not keen on relocating to Sheffield.
While O’Sullivan resides in Dubai, he initially made his move to Hong Kong through the ‘Quality Migrant Admission Scheme’ and it appears Vafaei may have had a similar success.
“Thanks to Hong Kong government for gifting me Hong Kong residency,” Vafaei posted on Instagram.
The Persian Prince has already seen a well-travelled career and found himself living in Darlington somewhat by accident in 2021. Vafaei relocated to County Durham where he practiced at the Q House Academy with players including Zhou Yuelong, Thepchaiya Un-nooh and compatriot Soheil Vahedi.
After travelling to the United Kingdom for the World Championship, lockdown struck and he remained. “At the moment I’m living in Darlington, for the last World Championship I came with one small suitcase and after that I couldn’t go back,” Vafaei said at the time.
“I just came by myself, I couldn’t even go back to change my clothes or anything, and now everything’s closed I couldn’t buy anything. Oh my God, what I’ve done, trying to lose some weight! I ordered stuff but it was too big, so I had to wait till lockdown finished to go to the shop.”
More recently, Vafaei took up residence in Sheffield. A decision he was very pleased about when it came to competing at this year’s World Championship at the Crucible.
“I live in Sheffield,” he said. I wake up from my own bed, I come to the match. Perfect.
“That’s why I came to live in Sheffield and be beside the Crucible, and to imagine one day lifting the trophy, and then it should happen.”
Vafaei was the only qualifier to make it past the first round last month before ultimately falling to eventual champion Wu Yize in the quarter-finals. Wu also resides in Sheffield, training at Ding Junhui’s academy.
“Sheffield is a snooker city. They love snooker. Lots of snooker academies here, lots of good international restaurants,” Vafaei has also said on living in the Steel City.
“Whenever you want to play someone, there’s always someone for you to play and not easy opponents, they always give you a good game. Sheffield is a good city.”

Sir Chris Hoy on navigating ‘dark days’ of cancer and how family coped | Other | Sport

Sir Chris Hoy says he has been uplifted by reports that more men are coming forward for prostate cancer screening following his own diagnosis. The Olympic legend’s world was turned upside down in 2023 when he received the devastating news. Sir Chris’ cancer has since spread to his bones and in 2024 doctors delivered the crushing blow that he had between two and four years left.
The 50-year-old amassed 37 medals throughout a glittering career as a track cyclist, claiming Olympic gold on six occasions, including at London 2012. He has demonstrated remarkable strength since his diagnosis and has successfully championed awareness for prostate cancer. He continues to generate funds through numerous charitable initiatives.
Sir Chris is organising another Tour de 4 charity cycling event in September, following last year’s maiden race which generated more than £3.1million. Speaking on the podcast Drive with Jim Farley, he revealed how he maintains positivity during his bleakest moments, drawing comfort from knowing that more men are seeking testing.
“All we have is the present, and it’s understanding that and recognising that no matter what’s going on in our lives, we have to bring ourselves back to the here and the now, and that’s how I’ve managed to deal with it,” he said. “Yeah, this big charity event is going on, it’s been, it’s been my focus, it’s helped us as a family.
“I think I’ve come to terms with it, and we’re dealing with it, I think, better than I imagined we could, and just trying to get an overall net positive gain. And going back to helping other people, there has been a huge spike in the number of men who are going to the doctors to request PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) tests.
“It’s now, I think it was something like 5,000 more men in the UK were tested during the first three weeks after my diagnosis was public. It’s incredible, the messages I get from men and from their families saying, ‘Because of your diagnosis, I had no, no symptoms, no worries, but I thought I’d go and check. Had a PSA test, and it turns out I do have cancer, but I’ve caught it early.’ And when it’s caught early, prostate cancer is very treatable.

“It lifts me up when, you know, I’m positive, and I always look for the positives or try to reject the negatives, but even then, you still have difficult times and you have dark days.
“The aim is also to change perceptions of stage four cancer. So stage four cancer is when it’s spread to the bones and there’s no cure, you can be treated for it, but there’s no cure.

“And so we have many people who’ll be riding on the day who are in the same situation as me, and have different forms of cancer, but it’s a stage four.
“And we want to change perceptions, because there’ll be people who’ll be getting the worst possible diagnosis while this ride is going on and it’s gonna be on the news and all the TV channels, and I thought it’d be quite a powerful thing to demonstrate that actually life goes on until it doesn’t go on, if you know what I mean.”

Sir Chris is married to Lady Sarra Hoy. The couple have son Callum and daughter Chloe. He spoke candidly about how his illness has taken its toll on his family and the way he sustains a positive mindset.
“You have to make the most of the present,” he said. “Whilst we all have plans for tomorrow, and we all have, it’s important to have goals and exciting things to aim for. All we actually have is the here and the now. You know, the past is gone, that’s history.
“I’ve got two young kids, they’re seven and 10, so it’s, as you might imagine, it’s been a very difficult couple of years, but when you hear these stories, it gives you a purpose, and you realise that it goes way beyond racing bikes or cars or anything like that. This is life and death.”

Barcelona grant Marcus Rashford wish as ideal Man Utd scenario clear | Football | Sport

Marcus Rashford helped propel Barcelona to the La Liga title as the Catalan giants clinched the championship with an El Clasico triumph over Real Madrid. Rashford netted a magnificent free-kick to give Barca the advantage at Camp Nou after merely nine minutes.
There can be few more unforgettable occasions than securing such a triumph against your fiercest adversaries. While Los Blancos have experienced episodes of internal discord leading up to the encounter, Barcelona have stayed concentrated on achieving their victory and cruised to success on Sunday evening.
Former Manchester City player Ferran Torres extended Barca’s advantage to help Rashford’s ambitions materialise. The United academy graduate had an objective upon joining the club last summer that was triumphantly fulfilled.
“I want to win the biggest trophies and feel like Barcelona is a huge club in the football world so it is the perfect place,” Rashford said at his official unveiling. “You see, with the team last season, they have a young, ambitious team, and I want to add my qualities, my personality, improve the team and help them win.”
Rashford was mobbed by his teammates after finding the net against Real Madrid, with his celebrations carrying him towards the dugout of Hansi Flick. The 28-year-old has consistently made clear his desire to prolong his time at Barcelona.
Rashford has registered 14 goals and 14 assists in 47 appearances during his spell with the Catalan club, earning considerable praise from manager Hansi Flick. Barca may still favour a cut-price transfer or a further loan arrangement, with Rashford’s wages presenting a significant stumbling block.
Yet last month, reports emerged that Rashford has ‘zero plans’ for his future beyond remaining at Barcelona. The forward was said to be ‘settled and valued in a squad he considers the best in the world’, and that sentiment appears unlikely to have shifted following tonight’s exploits.
Rashford is also reported to be willing to slash his wages by almost half, and tonight’s iconic impact could also pull at the heartstrings of those eager to see him prolong his stay. Either way, his performance will be welcome news for Manchester United.
His contribution could enhance his prospects of Barca triggering their option to sign him on a permanent basis, and if not, he has undoubtedly placed himself firmly in the shop window. A year on from being left out of United’s squad entirely, he has enjoyed a full season of making his mark one that could maximise any transfer fee his parent club are able to command.
The sole remaining concern is that Rashford has just a year remaining on his contract.
