Cruise guests warned to plan ahead as they could ‘run up an enormous bill’ | Cruise | Travel

Autumn cruise holidays have soared in popularity following a washout summer across the UK. A TUI spokesperson said: “Poorer summer weather in the source markets has boosted bookings and demand in autumn at higher rates.”
But what do cruise guests need to be aware of before they book? Dave Mills, chief commercial officer at Iglu Cruise and cruise expert, has issued a warning over package booking.
Dave said: “Most cruise lines offer all-you-can-eat food included in the price of your ticket, especially when eating in the main buffet area.
“However, it should be noted that some cruises will charge extra for certain restaurants or a la carte menus.”
While the cruise buffet is usually included in the price of the holiday, guests will need to pay extra for specialty restaurants on some lines. For example, Royal Caribbean guests can eat at the buffet or main dining room for free but will need to pay extra to eat at Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen or Chop’s Grille.
Dave added: “Drink packages are also something to think about. Many cruise companies sell drink packages at a fixed daily price, meaning guests can enjoy an unlimited selection of beers, wines, spirits and soft drinks without running up an enormous bar bill.
“However, if you’re not a big drinker, or you plan to spend most of your time off the ship onshore, then a drinks package may not be worth it for you.”
Drinks packages can include alcohol or guests can opt for a deal that only includes soft drinks, coffee and tea.
Value depends on how much the guest plans on drinking. Some cruise lines have online menus so guests can try to calculate the best deal.
Dave said: “If you plan to stay connected to the world whilst onboard your cruise, or plan to be posting on social media, you may need to think about a wifi package.
“While some cruise ships offer wifi as a built-in price, others charge extra, so make sure to do some research.”

The pretty island that’s 23C in April with £1.72 pints – ‘not to be missed’ | Travel News | Travel

April is the perfect time to head on a spring holiday abroad before prices rise for the summer season. If you’re hoping for some spring sun, there’s one destination that should be on your list. The Canary Islands are a popular tourist destination with Brits – but one stands out for its stunning scenery, warm weather and affordable drinks.
Lanzarote is an island that’s often returned to by its visitors who enjoy its incredible scenery. In April, weather forecasts show temperatures will reach up to 23C. And Brits can sit back and enjoy a pint for as cheap as €2 (1.72).
If you’re planning on visiting the island, one must-visit spot is Timanfaya National Park.
On Tripadvisor, the area is described as an awe-inspiring stretch of volcanic wasteland and a “desolate and bleak monument to the power of Mother Nature.”
One person who visited the park said: “Wonderful experience, so glad we visited. The landscape is unbelievable- looks like it from another planet. It’s not to be missed.”
Another person penned: “We drove ourselves to the national park and booked our tickets online in advance.
“We had to sit down before there was parking available (count on half an hour anyway), but the landscape in which you are waiting makes up for a lot.
“The bus ride was worth it, with beautiful views over the unspoiled nature and explanations in Spanish/English/German.
“There was plenty of time to take pictures from the bus. After the bus ride, some spectacle with the fire and the geyser, nice extras! Definitely one of the must-dos of Lanzarote for us.”
Another popular spot for holidaymakers is Playa Blanca. For those looking to enjoy a walk, Play Blanca’s promenade is a scenic and exciting place to take a stroll.
If you want to browse souvenirs, you can enjoy the shops which line the promenade or, if you’d rather soak in the seaside, you can enjoy the waves crashing onto the beach as you walk along.
For a unique experience, you should visit Lagomar Museum. The breathtaking rock gardens are home to caves, tunnels, secret passages and a lake. The museum is the perfect combination of nature and art.
If you’re hoping to visit, you can reach Lanzarote in around four hours and 15 minutes on a flight from London. April is the perfect time to book a trip to the island before the summer crowds head to the area.

British tourists in Majorca warned of £173 fine in ‘Spain’s most beautiful village’ | Travel News | Travel

Under the new rules, drivers who enter the restricted area without permission could be hit with fines of €200 (£173) as the local council moves to reduce traffic and protect the historic centre. The changes form part of a revived “Illa de Vianants” plan, which will transform parts of the old town and nearby areas into pedestrian-friendly zones. Authorities say parking will be completely banned inside the designated perimeter, while vehicle access will be tightly controlled. Only residents with garages, authorised vehicles and delivery services during limited hours will be permitted to enter.
Automatic semi-retractable bollards are set to be installed at four main entry points to the old town, including along Camí de Ronda where it meets streets such as Sant Jaume and Carrer d’en Serra.
The council will also introduce licence-plate recognition cameras to monitor which vehicles are authorised to enter the area.
Delivery drivers will also face strict rules, with loading and unloading allowed only until 10am. After that time, goods must be transported into the old town on foot.
According to the Majorca Daily Bulletin, Councillor for Police and Tourism, Joan Sendín, said: “The aim is to improve pedestrian safety, reduce traffic, and protect the historic centre’s heritage, prioritising people over vehicles while promoting urban coexistence, quality tourism, and environmental sustainability by cutting emissions.”
The driving crackdown comes as the charming walled town continues to attract growing interest from British tourists. Alcúdia Old Town, known for its cobbled streets, historic squares and medieval walls, has previously been named one of Spain’s most beautiful villages and a hidden gem just 0.62 miles (1km) inland from the famous holiday resort of Port d’Alcúdia.
The town was founded in the 13th century and still retains much of its original layout, with ancient walls and Roman ruins nearby drawing visitors year-round. Last year, the village secured the top spot in the data published in a report by the organisation with Telefónica Tech, being named Spain’s “most beautiful”.
One of its visitors wrote on TripAdvisor: “We were on a short family holiday staying in Can Picafort, and as a day trip we went to the old town of Alcudia. The public transport service was fantastic and brought us directly at a very reasonable cost. The imposing walls and old gate of the city provide a sense of history and the importance of defence in the days gone by.
“Inside those walls we found numerous pedestrianised narrow streets full of shops with all types of colourful goods to entice the tourist to part with some money. We stopped for coffee and ice-cream and then again for a rest and a cold drink. It was a very enjoyable change to sitting by the pool, and there was ample opportunity to pick up a souvenir or two.”
