Dame Esther’s petition gives MPs 200,000 reasons to end cruel assisted dying ban | UK | News

MPs have been given 200,000 reasons to “listen to the voice of the people” and end the cruel ban on assisted dying, Dame Esther Rantzen has said.
A petition started by the Daily Express surged past the latest signature milestone after becoming the most popular on the Government’s official website.
It has already secured a landmark debate which will put the issue in the political spotlight at Westminster Hall on Monday, April 29.
Dame Esther, 83, said: “This petition shows 200,000 reasons why it is time for MPs to listen to the voice of the people. Sadly I won’t be able to attend next week’s debate but I’ll be watching from home.
“Although the debate can’t change the law, I hope that so many powerful voices will take part that the Government will be forced to pay attention and make time for this life-and-death issue to be thoroughly investigated.

“So many of us feel that the current law is cruel and must be changed.”
The Daily Express Give Us Our Last Rights crusade, launched two years ago, is leading calls for a change in the law to allow assisted dying for terminally ill adults.
It received a major boost when Dame Esther bravely revealed she had registered with Dignitas in Zurich, Switzerland, following her diagnosis of stage four lung cancer.
Thousands have since rallied to back her call for the right to die and, earlier this week, the Childline founder joined a private meeting with the Express and MP Tonia Antoniazzi, who will open the petition debate.
Dame Esther, a lifelong campaigner, revealed she was surprised by the outpouring of support she received after speaking about her situation in December.
She said: “When I mentioned it in a podcast, I had no idea it was going to get the traction it did. It just seemed to resonate with so many people.
“The fact that the Express and Dignity in Dying picked it up is a reflection of the fact that as you get older, and circumstances mean that you witness or know of the deaths of people close to you, you become aware that as wonderful as palliative care can be, it doesn’t always create the sort of pain-free dignified death.
“When it doesn’t work and people are longing to die and say so to those around them, and everybody is helpless and can’t give them what they most want, then that becomes the abiding memory.”

Fear that her family would be left with horrific memories of her final days and hours led her to contact the Swiss assisted dying clinic, Dame Esther explained.
She added: “If those you love, their last memory of you is you struggling, in pain, in acute discomfort with a loss of dignity, maybe asking to be helped to die, that memory acts as a barrier to all the positive memories.
“It’s not how I want my loved ones to remember me. That undoes for me the joy of having a family that I’ve had so many happy times with, if all they can remember is the pain.”
However, the grandmother-of-five’s plans were dealt a blow when she realised her family would risk prosecution if they accompanied her.
“I signed up to Dignitas and then discovered that they couldn’t come with me,” she said. “Even if I could afford the air fares for all of us, it would put them at risk of a police investigation – even though I’m not known for keeping my views quiet.”
The meeting was part of Ms Antoniazzi’s research ahead of the crucial debate. The Welsh Labour MP also opened the last Westminster Hall debate on assisted dying on July 4 2022.

Then, Ms Antoniazzi broke down in tears as she read heartbreaking stories of people who suffered indignity at the end of their lives.
She shared examples including the case of Gareth Ward, whose father Norman shot himself in the head when life with terminal prostate cancer became unbearable.
Dame Esther said it was important that the voices of people like Gareth – who have been forced to watch loved ones suffer – are heard later this month.
The That’s Life! presenter added: “Painful though it is, if we can actually describe what it’s like watching someone die in agony, someone you love who is asking for assistance and is being denied it, that’s what people need to understand.”
Arguments against assisted dying were also discussed. Opponents often say that if palliative care were improved in the UK then assisted dying would not be needed.
But Dame Esther said it was clear that “the best palliative care in the world cannot give everyone a pain-free, dignified death”.
She urged medics to read a recent Commons Health Select Committee report which found that the introduction of assisted dying in other countries had often come with improvements to end-of-life care.
“We aren’t criticising palliative care practitioners – we need them and we value them,” Dame Esther said.
“But the fact is that it’s not possible always to give people the death that they choose themselves.
“We believe that assisted dying being legalised under these circumstances would strengthen what they do, their very important branch of medicine.
“I know that some doctors say, ‘I don’t want to do this. This is not what I trained to do’. Just as we, the patients, should be given the choice, doctors should have the choice.”
Dame Esther paid tribute to other public figures, including actress Diana Ring, who spoke out around the same time she did.
And she revealed that of the deluge of messages she received, only one opposed her decision and said assisted dying was a crime for religious reasons.
She said: “If your religion precludes you having an assisted death, or for any reason you oppose it, that’s your choice.
“All we’re asking is that people who make a different choice should also be allowed to have the death that they wish.”
Repeating her demand for MPs to be given a free vote on the issue, the broadcaster urged politicians to “respond as human beings, and think about their own loved ones, their parents, their children”.
She added: “If they had a terminal illness which caused them such intense pain they wanted to die, what would it be like to be prevented from giving them the pain-free death they’re begging for?”
Ms Antoniazzi told Dame Esther the debate was sure to be a “pivotal moment”. She added: “I feel very strongly because I’m probably of a similar age to your daughter and my mother has been very unwell.
“I hope that it has been good for your family to be able to talk about it. One of the things we do need to talk about as a society is dying – we don’t do it well enough.”

Rumour of rickshaw driver’s lynching sparks vandalism at Uttara shopping mall

Hundreds of rickshaw pullers surrounded and vandalised a shopping mall in Dhaka’s Uttara late on Sunday night (15 March) following allegations that a rickshaw driver was beaten to death over a parking dispute in front of the market.
Police were unable to bring the situation under control as of filing this report at 2:30am Monday.
According to several local sources, the quarrel over parking between unidentified parties began in front of Uttara Square shopping mall on Sonargaon Janapath Road in Uttara Sector-13 around 11:30pm Sunday.
The situation escalated after claims spread that a rickshaw driver was assaulted and killed during the argument. The Business Standard could not confirm any such death until the filing of this report.
Witnesses said hundreds of rickshaw pullers gathered shortly afterwards, surrounding the shopping mall and subsequently vandalising several of its floors. They also chanted slogans demanding justice for the alleged killing. The crowd outside also hurled bricks and stones at the market.
The unrest reportedly has continued for more than two hours, creating panic among residents in nearby residential sectors, including Sector 13.
Despite being within stone-throwing distance of Uttara West Police Station, locals initially reported not seeing any police presence at the scene during the early stages of the incident.
Residents expressed safety concerns and warned that the situation could escalate further without immediate intervention by law enforcement.
Until the filing of this report at 2:30am Monday, police did not respond to TBS queries. A TBS correspondent also sought comment from Uttara Zone Assistant Commissioner Saddam Hossain via phone and WhatsApp messages, but he did not respond.

An Awami League leader from Bogura who was allegedly assaulted by a mob and later handed over to police has died while in custody.
Shahnur Alam Shanto, 55, a local leader of the activity-banned Awami League from Sariakandi upazila, died around 10pm on Friday (14 March) while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases.
With his death, six Awami League leaders from Bogura who were imprisoned have died while receiving treatment.
Bogura Jail Superintendent Nurul Mubin said, “Shahnur Alam Shanto was sent to Bogura jail on 4 January in connection with an explosives case filed in Bogura Sadar.
“Later, on 17 January, he was transferred from Bogura to the Keraniganj Central Jail in Dhaka,” he added.
According to Shahnur’s relatives, “On the night of 3 January several BNP activists allegedly created a mob in the Naruli area of Bogura town, assaulted him and took him away. They later demanded Tk3 lakh as ransom. When the family sought assistance from Bogura Sadar Police Station, police rescued him but took him into custody instead of arresting the alleged abductors.”
His wife, Mariam Sultana, alleged that although there was no case filed at the police station, Bogura Sadar police kept him detained for two days. Later, he was arrested in an old explosives case under investigation and produced before a court on 5 January. The court rejected his bail petition and ordered that he be sent to jail. He was later taken to hospital after falling ill in prison.
Deputy Jailor of Keraniganj Central Jail Tayeba told media that Shahnur was sent to hospital after he fell ill. “He had previously been sent to hospital twice after becoming ill,” she said.
Investigating officer of the case, SI Amit Hasan of Bogura Sadar Police Station, said Shahnur was arrested in a case filed for the attempted murder of BNP leader Suraiya Zerin and under the Explosives Act.
According to his wife, Shahnur suffered from high blood pressure and diabetes. About seven years ago he lost one leg in a motorcycle accident and had a rod inserted in his hand. He used to move around with the help of crutches.
Raqib Hossain, the deceased’s son alleged that his father did not receive proper medical treatment. He said that by the time his father was taken to hospital, his kidneys had already stopped functioning.
Although doctors advised that he be taken to the National Institute of Kidney Diseases and Urology, prison authorities took him back to the Keraniganj Central Jail. Later, when his condition became critical, he was taken to hospital again, where doctors declared him dead around 10pm.
