Netflix fans told to ignore reviews of action classic remake | Films | Entertainment

Omar Sy and Nathalie Emmanuel in The Killer

It’s quickly become a most watched film on Netflix (Image: Universal)

The action-packed remake appears destined to become Netflix’s most-watched film.

Viewers cannot stop watching the action thriller, which some have hailed as ‘absolutely perfect’ despite its less-than-glowing critical reception.

It was only added to the platform a few days ago, yet has rapidly climbed towards the top of the streamer’s charts.

At the time of writing, The Killer currently sits at number 2 in the most-watched films among Netflix UK subscribers, pipped only by the recently released creature feature Thrash, which holds the top spot.

According to its synopsis, The Killer comes from acclaimed action director John Woo, whose previous credits include Face/Off, Mission: Impossible 2, and Hard Boiled.

It is in fact an English language remake of his own film of the same name, originally set in Hong Kong and released in 1989.

In this updated version, Game of Thrones star Nathalie Emmanuel portrays Zee, a mysterious and notorious assassin feared throughout the Parisian underworld as the Queen of the Dead.

However, while carrying out an assignment for her shadowy mentor and handler, Zee refuses to kill a blinded young woman in a nightclub, reports the Mirror.

That fateful choice shatters Zee’s alliances, attracts the attention of a sharp police investigator played by Omar Sy, and draws her into a dark criminal conspiracy that puts her on a direct collision course with her own past.

While the original went on to inspire acclaimed directors such as Quentin Tarantino and is regarded by many as one of the greatest action films ever made, the remake failed to make the same impression. It managed only a score of 59% on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

Critical opinion was largely divided over the film’s qualities. Some labelled it a disappointment, while others argued it still retained several of Woo’s signature touches. One critic claimed: “No, this isn’t going to end up being an action classic like its predecessor, but it does offer a lot for those willing to give it a chance.”

Yet another remarked, “Cheap, sluggish, and often tedious.” Despite this, Netflix audiences have been tuning in to watch it in considerable numbers.

There are, however, plenty of viewers who wholeheartedly endorse it and encourage others to judge for themselves. One such viewer posted: “I can’t stress this enough IGNORE the other reviews. This movie was thoroughly enjoyable. Firstly great acting and chemistry between the leads. Secondly, thank you, John Woo, for finally giving us a good action movie with great fight scenes and actual real stunts.”

Another echoed a similar sentiment: “Enjoyed it from the start! Be your own judge on this one because the bad reviews from the so call critics is RIDICULOUS!”

One enthusiastic viewer declared, “Finally, a John Woo film like the old days! Stylish, bloody, and pigeons in slow motion! What more could you want? Absolutely perfect!” Some observers have pointed out that viewers ought not to confuse the film with another Netflix original of the same name.

That title was released the year prior, in 2023, and was directed by David Fincher. It too centred on a hitman, was adapted from a French graphic novel series, and holds a considerably stronger Rotten Tomatoes score than Woo’s remake.

The Killer is streaming on Netflix.

Mumbai Skyline In Delhi? Pakistan’s ‘Answer To Dhurandhar’ Is Weak Detailing

Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar created a stir around the world, especially in Pakistan where the Aditya Dhar directorial couldn’t release theatrically due to continuing tensions between the two neighbouring countries. Nevertheless, the film found its way into Pakistan via cheaply priced pirated DVDs and illegal streaming before it started streaming on Netflix Pakistan. Last month, Dhurandhar 2 also made it to Pakistan through illegal channels.

As Dhurandhar became popular in the country, many Pakistanis were unhappy about the portrayal of Lyari — where most of the action in the film was set. They said the film was defaming Lyari, one of the most densely populated neighbourhoods in Karachi, as a slum and gangland rife with crime and political machinations. The Sindh Information Department even announced its own film Mera Lyari, calling Dhurandhar “propaganda”. While Mera Lyari has yet to be released, a P-drama is being pegged as Pakistan’s answer to Dhurandhar.

Clips from Jahannum Ba’raasta Jannat, a Pakistani show seemingly based on an India-Pakistan espionage plot, are going viral on the Indian social media.

Jahannum Ba’raasta Jannat, which roughly translates to ‘Hell on the way to Paradise’ in English, started airing on Pakistani TV channel Green Entertainment from March 29. The show airs every Sunday at 8 pm. The Urdu-language programme stars Umer Aalam, Momina Iqbal, Bushra Ansari, and Javed Sheikh.

Indian social media is, however, having a gala time mocking the Pakistani drama. And the reasons are legit. A section of X users says Jahannum Ba’raasta Jannat is a badly done Pakistani show chronicling the Indian side of espionage.

The complaints are many: The actors are speaking Urdu dialogues with an awkward phrasing of complex Hindi words that don’t fit into the situation. The accent is also completely off, convincing them that the actors may be playing so-called Indian characters but the actors are definitely Pakistani. The production quality isn’t worth even a mention.

How Indian Internet Is Reacting To Jahannum Ba’raasta Jannat Amid Dhurandhar 2 Storm

One of them found out a key plot hole, messing up the entire geography of India.

Eagle-eyed fans also found out that the actor who plays RAW director in the show is Javed Sheikh, who has starred in several Bollywood films such as Om Shanti Om and Namastey London.

Indians aren’t impressed, the team of Dhurandhar would surely be not.

This past evening at Day 3 of CinemaCon 2026 in Las Vegas, the Daily Express attended the Amazon MGM Studios presentation.

If there was going to be any next James Bond news anytime soon, this was the place to announce it.

During the show, Courtenay Valenti, Head of Film, stood in front of the iconic MGM Lion logo that has opened every official James Bond movie since 1962’s Dr No and finally addressed the future of 007.

Speaking plainly, the MGM boss said: “Now, I know you’re all wondering when we’re going to announce who’s playing James Bond. Please know that we’re taking the time to do this with care and deep respect. It is the dream of a lifetime for all of us to bring audiences this next chapter, and it’s a responsibility we don’t take lightly. What I can tell you is this…”

Valenti continued: “When you pair one of the most beloved franchises in history with a world-class filmmaking team, including the brilliant director Denis Villeneuve, extraordinary producers Amy Pascal and David Heyman, executive producer Tanya Lapointe, and screenwriter Steven Knight, you’re setting the stage for something that’s truly worthy of the Bond legacy. That film is coming, and when the time is right, we’ll have much more to share.”

Given Denis presented the first 7 minutes of Dune Part 3 at the Warner Bros panel the day before, the director is still busy in post-production on the sci-fi epic ahead of its December release. No doubt he’ll only turn to Bond when that blockbuster is in the can.
