‘It’s definitely dark but not so funny’ – Maggie Moore(s) review | Films | Entertainment

He was great in Mad Men but Hollywood doesn’t seem to know what to do with the debonair charms and dry wit of Jon Hamm.
So after attempting to relaunch Chevy Chase’s Fletch franchise, he’s back on the small screen with a misfiring black comedy.
Managing the two tones involves a notoriously tricky balancing act and the wobbly Maggie Moore(s) should deepen your appreciation of the Coen brothers and Banshees Of Inisherin director Martin McDonagh.
Beginning with a title card informing us that “some of this actually happened”, director (and fellow Mad Men star) John Slattery takes us to a small American town which feels an awful lot like the Coens’ Fargo.
Hamm’s Sheriff Jordan Sanders is investigating the murder of a local woman. When he discovers her identity he raises a very Hammy eyebrow. Because this is the second Maggie Moore to have been murdered in the past week.
The film winds back a week to reveal who was responsible for the first death – her husband.
Fast-food restaurant manager Jay (Micah Stock) hires a heavy to scare his wife after she discovers he’s in hock to a paedophile over shady dealings with out-of-date meat. But the goon goes too far, burning her to death in her car.
It transpires Jay ordered the murder of the second Maggie Moore to cover his tracks. The hapless criminal figures cops will think his Maggie was a case of mistaken identity.
It’s definitely dark but is any of this funny? I’m not sure Slattery thinks so, either. Still, the cop, along with his wisecracking deputy (Nick Mohammed), sets about working out what we already know.
Along the way, Jordan gets involved with Jay’s nosy neighbour (Tina Fey). The two spark off each other nicely but stirring romance into this brew doesn’t make it go down any more easily.

Director Steven Spielberg’s is back with his highly anticipated return to the science fiction genre with new film Disclosure Day. The movie was o-written with his frequent collaborator David Koepp, and serves as a thematic culmination and a “summation film” to his legendary alien-centric filmography, which includes Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., and War of the Worlds. It is being released in UK cinemas today (June 10) and will launch in US theatres on Friday (June 12).
Instead of a traditional alien invasion story, Disclosure Day plays out like a gritty, fast-paced 1970s conspiracy thriller merged with Minority Report style corporate surveillance. The fi;m starts inside an ongoing fight to declassify decades worth of concealed alien presence on Earth.
Whistleblower Daniel Kellner (Josh O’Connor) is a cybersecurity expert who steals a massive archive of top-secret data from the nefarious Wardex corporation containing concrete proof of alien contact.
Meanwhile, Margaret Fairchild (Emily Blunt) – the messenger – is a Kansas City television meteorologist who is suddenly imbued with unexplainable abilities—eventually breaking into a live broadcast speaking an unknown alien math language that only Daniel can interpret.
The two characters are experience a mysterious pull together while on the run from a ruthless government and corporate agency figure named Noah (Colin Firth), who intends to suppress the truth at all costs.
The movie features a top ensemble cast and a reunion of Spielberg’s most iconic behind-the-scenes creatives. Alongside Blunt and O’Connor, Colin Firth, Colman Domingo, Eve Hewson, and Wyatt Russell all star in the film.
Janusz Kamiński returns as the Director of Photography, utilising continuous camera motion and old-school lens flares to capture a mood of tense, persuasive gloom.
Meanwhile, John Williams composed the musical score, which critics have described as subtle, building in confidence as the characters navigate their journey.
Early reviews are very positive, with multiple major publications calling it Spielberg’s finest, most cohesive blockbuster in two decades.
Critics have heavily praised Blunt’s powerful, potentially award-winning performance, Koepp’s dialogue-heavy script, and a staggering second-act chase sequence.
Instead of relying on heavy CGI spectacle, reviewers note that the movie functions primarily as an emotional plea for human empathy, unity, and truth in a deeply divided world.
Giving his take on the movie, TikTok reviewer Alex (@popculturebrain), who has a whopping 957,000 followers, gave a four-word verdict on the movie.
He told fans: “Spielberg is so back.”
Continuing, the reviewer said he was going to tell fans “the good and the bad without spoilers”.
He said: “Alright, Steven Spielberg never went away, but this is the movie the world has been waiting for him to deliver.
“First let’s start out with the script. Spielberg created the story, then David Koepp wrote a brilliant elegantly constructed screenplay that mixes intrigue, heart, ethical questions, humour and dazzling sci-fi concepts.”
Alex noted that this gave fans a movie that was “old school Spielberg” but through a modern social political lens.
The reviewer also said the film “tackles big societal questions and moral dilemmas like the best sci-fi always does”.
Alex commented that the movie feels “original and fresh” and “essential to the world right now”.
He also added it has “incredible” action scenes, layered tension and threat and great cinematography.
Talking about the ending, he claimed it was “the most gripping climax since One Battle After Another”.
He said: “It grabs for 30+ minutes and does not let go. You could feel the entire audience being swept up in its drama.”
Talking about his few “minor nitpicks”, Alex said the script “withholds a lot of information from the audience” as the film “hinges on mystery”. He noted: “Your tolerance for that may vary.”
He also mentioned he thought a gas station scene was “inconsistent” with the rest of the film and said some of the sound affects used were “distracting”.
However, he added: “But again, those were just minor nitpicks. All in all, this movie rocks and is another huge win for originality in theatres.”
Fans were loving the review, with it going viral with more than 8,000 likes.
One person exclaimed: “I’m so excited to see it. I have loved the trailers and I’m going to see it in IMAX on Thursday.”
While another wrote: “I wasn’t excited by the trailer but these reviews coming out, it looks like I’m wrong.”
However, a third chimed in: “I have to say it all looks good on paper, but I’m skeptical. I guess we’ll see.”

Back To The Future Actor Crispin Glover Denies Keeping Ex Girlfriend As “Sex Slave”

Actor Crispin Glover has denied accusations that he unlawfully kept a woman as his “live in girlfriend/sex slave.”
In documents filed with the Los Angeles County Superior Court on June 3, the Back to the Future actor claimed that the allegations made against him by an unnamed model in a February 25 lawsuit were false. He also alleged that the complaint was a way to extract money from him.
The model, known as Jane Doe in the documents, hails from the United Kingdom. She had accused Glover of fraud, battery, malicious prosecution, infliction of emotional distress, wrongful eviction, and violations of California’s Bane Act, as per Entertainment Weekly.
Glover, 62, has filed a cross-complaint, characterising the woman’s behaviour as “willful, fraudulent, oppressive, and malicious”. He has accused her of unlawful trespass, battery, assault and intrusion into private affairs. Glover also shared a copy of an alleged temporary restraining order against the woman taken out on March 4.
The actor is seeking damages and demanding a jury trial.
In February, a lawsuit filed against Glover claimed that he had “manipulated” the complainant into moving to Los Angeles and working as his assistant in 2024.
The woman claimed that she ended up in “a disturbing situation” where she was reportedly “held captive” by the actor in his home and coerced to become his “girlfriend/sex slave.”
The lawsuit said that when the woman wouldn’t go along with Glover’s demands, he allegedly “unlawfully evicted” her. The actor also stands accused of later assaulting the woman when she tried to re-enter his house to get back her belongings and pet cats.
The lawsuit states that Glover “made a false police report and fraudulent petition for a restraining order against” the Jane Doe and continued to “harass and sexually pursue” her.
In his cross-complaint, Glover said he had “a brief romantic relationship” with Jane Doe and claimed he realised she suffered “ from serious mental health issues, including bipolar disorder” after she had moved into his home, as per Page Six.
Glover said their relationship ended on March 1, 2024, when the woman asked him to “deceive others by saying that we were married in an Islamic ceremony”. He claimed that when he refused, she started “acting erratically.”
The next day, the woman reportedly came back to Glover’s home with an “unknown man” and they “verbally and physically” attacked the actor. The 62-year-old said he called the police to arrest his ex for felony assault.
Later on, Glover claimed he got an email from Doe’s lawyer in September 2025, asking for “an unspecified amount of money” to prevent legal action against him.
