John Wayne called one film icon ‘a complete idiot’ and another ‘the worst actor in town’ | Films | Entertainment

John Wayne was famously opinionated about politics, Westerns and communists.
The Duke’s devotion to the purity of Westerns was an extension of his own personal, deeply-rooted conservative views.
He refused to work with Clint Eastwood on numerous occasions, rejecting studio advances to cast them together in films like Joe Kidd, based on the other star’s prominence in the changing tone of Westerns.
But he was remarkably able to separate his issues with fellow actors’ political views from their professional abilities, happily working with Hollywood liberals, though rarely socialising with them on set.
He almost never spoke disparagingly of other actors’ actual talents (or lack thereof), although his daughter revealed two very famous exceptions.
Wayne has been constantly on TV over the Bank Holiday in a series of Westerns from The War Wagon, Chisum and Red River to, finally, The Alamo this evening.
The Duke also directed that film and had a famous clash with actor Richard Widmark, based on the other’s insubordination.
Pilar Wayne’s 1987 book John Wayne: My Life With the Duke, spilled on numerous clashed her father had, as well as those two infamous character assassinations.
Of the situation with Widmark, she wrote: “He kept on arguing with Duke in front of the rest of the cast and crew. Predictably, the day came when Duke’s patience ran out… Widmark and Duke had a violent confrontation and Duke threw the smaller man against a wall.”
George Takei, who starred with Wayne in The Green Berets, made it clear that these clashes were always based in on-set behaviour.
He told The Express they had no problems despite holding wildly different views: “There was a core of decency in him. He was a very pro-war guy and when I went in for the interview I said, ‘I have to be honest with you, I don’t agree with you about the Vietnam War. I have been campaigning against the war. I wanted you to know.’
“He surprised me. He said, ‘I am hiring the best actor I can for the role, that’s all that I am concerned about.”
Pilar Wayne noted one actor who seemed to rile her father more than any other: “When it came to his contemporaries in film, I only heard him speak once with any real venom.
“Gene Hackman could never appear on-screen without my father skewering his performance… Back then, however, my father called Hackman ‘the worst actor in town. He’s awful.’”
The Duke was also uncharacteristically unking about another legendary Hollywood legend.
Pilar Wayne wrote that her father said of Clark Gable: “[He’s] extremely handsome in person,” Wayne said. “That’s one guy that doesn’t need Hollywood to make him look good. But Gable’s an idiot. You know why Gable’s an actor? It’s the only thing he’s smart enough to do.”
This was connected to Wayne’s dismissal of those, like Gable, who viewed acting as an art. He said: “I don’t act at all, I react.”
He added: “All I do is sell sincerity, and I’ve been selling the hell out of that since I started… That arty crowd has only surface brilliance anyway. Real art is basic emotion. If a scene is handled with simplicity—and I don’t mean simple—it’ll be good and the public will know it.”

Singer and actor Joe Jonas has confirmed his relationship with model Tatiana Gabriela, nearly two years after his divorce from actress Sophie Turner, according to E! News.
The Jonas Brothers member made his relationship Instagram official by sharing a series of pictures with Gabriela during a trip to Puerto Rico.
In one of the photos, Gabriela is seen posing closely with Jonas in a photo booth. Other images show the singer enjoying beachside moments, local food, and scenic views on the island. Captioning the post, Jonas wrote, “If you’re seeing this, it means my Puerto Rico YouTube video is up now.”
Jonas also gave a glimpse into their relationship through a YouTube vlog, where the couple is seen spending time together exploring Puerto Rico. In the video, Gabriela helps Jonas learn Spanish as they visit local spots and a waterfall.
“She’s helping with my Spanish,” Jonas said in the vlog, adding, “Then we went to a waterfall, we jumped in, it was so nice.”
The couple had been sparking dating rumours since November last year.
Jonas, who shares daughters with Turner, has previously spoken about balancing his personal life and career.
“Five shows in a row doesn’t make it easy to meet someone for coffee,” he said in an earlier interview, noting that he has met people through social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok.
He has also stressed the importance of co-parenting with Turner. “I have a beautiful co-parenting relationship that I’m really grateful for,” Jonas said, praising Turner as “an incredible mum.”

‘Masterpiece’ thriller you’re ‘not allowed to talk about’ arrives on Netflix | Films | Entertainment

A “masterpiece” thriller that fans say you’re not allowed to talk about is streaming now in the UK. Fight Club (1999) focuses on an unnamed depressed office worker (played by Edward Norton) who struggles with insomnia. But his dreary and repetitive daily routine take a dramatic turn when he meets mercurial soap salesman Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) who enourages him to abandon the consumerist prison he’s built for himself, and embrace the darker pleasures of life.
After our anonymous narrator’s high rise condo is destroyed in an explosion, he moves in with Tyler at his dilapidated house, and the pair start an underground meet where strangers beat each other up, just to feel something. Meanwhile, the unnamed protagonist develops a bond with Marla Singer (Helena Bonham Carter), another desperate, disaffected soul who Tyler also takes a shine to. The film was directed by David Fincher, from a screenplay by Jim Uhls based on Chuck Palahniuk’s 1996 novel of the same name.
The story’s twists and turns make talking about it without spoilers notoriously difficult, leading many fans to encourage others just to see it and enjoy the mindbending experience for themselves.
It’s a sentiment mirrored in one of the most iconic lines from the movie: “The first rule of Fight Club is you do not talk about Fight Club”.
Fans have taken to IMDb to shower it with praise, with one writing: “Fight Club does exactly what movies should do, blow our minds, make us ask questions of ourselves and our society, and all the while thoroughly entertain us. Edward Norton and Brad Pitt are at their very best.”
Another wrote: “Everything about Fight Club is simply amazing. The acting, the directing, and the story is simply superb. However, going into this film I had already had had some of the major twists spoiled for me, and this is a movie that relies so heavily on those twists that knowing them will detract from the experience significantly.
“Because of that, the film is really only worth seeing of you have no prior knowledge of it whatsoever.”
A third hailed it as a “time-defying masterpiece” adding it’s a movie that “doesn’t offer answers but provokes your senses, instincts and thinking to look for them in every aspect of your life”.
“A movie you never get bored watching and enjoy lip syncing its lines. A must watch.”
A fourth gave it a perfect score, writing: “I’m a huge movie buff, and never have I sat through a movie as intense, gripping, well acted, directed, and incredibly written as fight club. I wish I could talk about it but the number one rule is, you can’t.”
The film has a 15 certificate and contains strong violence, injury detail, language, sex, self-harm, threat, and nudity – so viewer discretion is advised.
Fight Club was added to Netflix in the UK on Sunday, April 19. It’s also available to stream on Disney+ or rent or buy on other platforms including YouTube and Apple TV. The film is also being released on 4K Bluray in May with a new Ultra HD restoration.
