Lewis Hamilton case thrown out as judge says Piquet remarks not racist | F1 | Sport

The case involving Lewis Hamilton and Nelson Piquet has taken another twist after a Brazilian judge ruled his controversial comments about the Mercedes star could not be classified as hate speech. Piquet had been ordered to pay a huge £817,000 fine after the former world champion made comments about Hamilton – that were deemed to be racist – live on Portuguese TV back in 2021. But that decision has now been overturned after Piquet lodged an appeal.
In a judgement published by Judge Aiston Henrique de Sousa, Hamilton has learned Piquet’s comments had “no demonstration of hate speech”.
He elaborated: “The use of terms from colloquial language, even if riddled with subtle or involuntary racist inspiration, even if inappropriate, does not carry sufficient gravity and relevance to characterise the collective damage.”
The judge also ruled that Piquet did not make homophobic statements when he said that Hamilton “must have been giving more a** back then”, adding that: “The debauchery made by the defendant could also have been the object of sexual practice between a man and a woman, so that the occurrence of hate speech against homosexuals cannot be derived from this.”
The case against Piquet was not submitted to the court by Hamilton himself but by a social justice campaign in Brazil. Charges were brought against the three-time F1 champion by four human rights groups, with Brazil’s National LGBT+ Alliance demanding a fine in the amount of £1.5m for alleged moral damages caused by the incident.
Hamilton had praised the Brazilian court’s original decision after learning of the verdict from Judge Pedro Matos de Arrudo back in March to rule in favour of Educafro, the group that presented the case to the court.
“I would like to acknowledge the Brazilian government. I think it’s pretty amazing what they have done in holding someone accountable, showing people that it’s not tolerated – racism and homophobia is not acceptable, and there is no place for it within our society,” he said.
“I love that they have shown that they stand for something. I wish more governments out there would do that.”
Piquet, whose son Nelson Piquet Jr also raced in F1 between 2008 and 2011 and whose daughter Kelly is currently dating world champion Max Verstappen, apologised for his comments shortly after the initial verdict.
The ex-F1 star insisted that the comments he made had been mistranslated with the phrase used ‘colloquially’ in Brazilian-Portuguese and stressed he would ‘never’ use the word in a racial context.
After the latest development, it is reported the campaigners will take the case to the Federal Supreme Court.

Team GB star hit with unusual punishment five times at Winter Olympics | Other | Sport

Weston’s exploits have made him a household name, as well as helping to put skeleton as a sport on the map. But his achievements have also ended up costing him quite a bit, as the 28-year-old has been punished five times for… being too fast.
That’s because of an unwritten rule in skeleton that means whenever a track record is broken by an athlete, they have to buy the track workers a crate of beer. The kicker for Weston (specifically his wallet), is that he’s broken the record five times since arriving at the 2026 Olympics!
Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “I need to supply a lot of beer for the track records. Those who don’t know, the tradition is whenever you break a track record you have to buy a crate of beer for the track workers and I’ve broken five of them so it’s a lot.”
Tabitha Stoecker, who was the other half of the mixed team that won gold, chipped in with: “I’ll lend you the money Matt.” To which Weston, with a big grin on his face, replied: “Thank you. Team event, so that’s one split. So yeah, pretty insane.”

Weston’s golds have been the story of the Games so far for Team GB, with the Brit saying: “The individual event is amazing but doing it as a team when we’re normally an individual sport is amazing. To have my team-mate by my side as Olympic champions, two-time for me which is crazy. I’m looking forward to the celebrations!”
Before adding: “Luckily, I felt like I kind of knew what I needed to do. Yesterday – not yesterday, the day before, it’s all a bit of a whirlwind – when I had the individual event, I kind of took a load of confidence from that, and I just had to almost in my head be boring and get the job done. We’ve done it again!”
