David Sullivan steps down from West Ham roles as statements released | Football | Sport

West Ham United owner David Sullivan has stepped down from his position as joint-chair of the club, resigned as a director of WH Holding Limited and West Ham. Sullivan has made the decision after being made aware of ‘impending publication of serious historic allegations’ and denies any illegal conduct.
West Ham said in a statement: “West Ham United can confirm that Joint-Chair David Sullivan has stepped down from his position with immediate effect.
“Mr Sullivan has also resigned as a director of both WH Holding Limited and West Ham United Football Club, having been made aware of the impending publication of serious historic allegations. It is understood none of the allegations relate to West Ham United or any of its operations.
“Through his own legal representatives Mr Sullivan denies any illegal conduct and has taken the decision to step down in order to avoid disruption to the Club while he addresses the matter privately.
“Interim Chief Executive Officer Karim Virani, reporting into the current Board of Directors, will continue to be responsible for leading the Club’s day-to-day operations. The Club will provide an update on the future structure of the Board of Directors in due course, but will make no further comment at this time.”
The allegations do not relate to Sullivan’s involvment in football. He and partner David Gold purchased Birmingham City in 1993, and after selling their stakes in 2009, they bought a 50 per cent stake in West Ham.
The 77-year-old has released his own statement, following his decision to step down. “I have recently become aware that factually incorrect and entirely false, decades-old allegations concerning my personal life are due to be broadcast and published,” he said.
“The false allegations levelled against me have been sensationalised by the media. After a lifetime spent building businesses in the adult industry in which I have met thousands of women, it is sadly inevitable that a small number of improper conduct claims are being made against me. I categorically deny these claims.
“I am a private man, and those who personally and professionally know the real David Sullivan, not the caricature invented by the tabloids, know exactly who I am and what I stand for. I am absolutely not the person the media has decided to paint me as.”

Sullivan has revealed he is stepping down to avoid his personal situation becoming a distraction at a pivotal time for the club following their relegation from the Premier League. The Irons fell into the Championship despite victory on the final day of the season as they finished 18th in the top-flight.
“At a challenging and important time for the club, I refuse to allow personal matters concerning me to become an unnecessary distraction or a source of instability,” Sullivan said.
“Therefore, after very careful consideration and with a heavy heart, I have decided to resign as Joint-Chair and Director of West Ham United FC with immediate effect.
“This has been an incredibly painful decision to make, but it is one made out of love, respect, and responsibility toward a football club and a fan base that deserve absolute unity and focus moving forward.”

Rory McIlroy repeats Masters tactic as he defends decision | Golf | Sport

Rory McIlroy has already scouted the US Open venue as he targets another major championship. The 37-year-old is scheduled to compete at Shinnecock Hills later this month and recently repeated his approach of getting an early glimpse of the course.
McIlroy claimed the sixth major title of his career in April as he successfully retained the Masters at Augusta. The Northern Irishman prevailed by one stroke over Scottie Scheffler but his preparations split opinion. Following a back issue, McIlroy had remained absent from competition for nearly a month before the tournament. However, he also used part of his break to practice at Augusta, sparking debate about the fairness of his preparations. “It gave me the opportunity to go up to Augusta and prepare maybe more than anyone else in the field,” McIlroy told the New Heights podcast last month. “Which I actually got a bit a little bit of s*** for afterward, which was weird.”
Despite the criticism, McIlroy has embraced the same strategy before the US Open. He recently shared that he visited Shinnecock Hills earlier this week, which last staged the major in 2018.
“The fairways are very generous. They’re more generous than they were in 2018 but the first cut of rough is five inches long,” McIlroy said of his time at Shinnecock Hills. “The greens are rolling around 11, 11.2 [anything over 12 is considered fast and last year’s US Open at Oakmont was between 13 and 14], something like that and I really don’t think they need to get much faster.
“I think if they can keep them at that speed they can get them firm and use the hole locations that they want to use without having some of the struggles that they have had the last couple of US Opens.”
McIlroy is currently competing at the Memorial Tournament in Ohio, though he has been selective about which events he has entered this year. Following his injury-affected appearance at the Players Championship in March, McIlroy bypassed several PGA Tour events before commencing his Masters title defence.
Having secured yet another Green Jacket, the six-time major champion entered only the Truist Championship before May’s PGA Championship. He has continued to maintain a more relaxed schedule, with the Memorial Tournament serving as his sole event before the US Open, and has robustly defended his approach.
“I’ve been doing this a long time. I’ve been on tour more than half of my life at this point,” McIlroy explained. “So I’ll pick and choose my spots like I have been doing sort of the last 18 months to two years.
“Does it mean it makes it harder for myself to win the FedEx Cup or whatever the season-long title race is going to be called? Absolutely. But I’m OK with that because it brings balance to my life and lets me enjoy things outside of the game.”
The Memorial Tournament has marked McIlroy’s return to competitive golf after choosing to bypass the CJ Cup Byron Nelson and the Charles Schwab Challenge. He currently sits in a share of 19th place on one over par after two rounds.
JT Poston holds a one-stroke advantage on nine-under at the midway point of the tournament. The victor will collect the £3million first prize.

Fred Vasseur misses Monaco GP qualifying as Ferrari give health update | F1 | Sport

Fred Vasseur is under observation at a ‘local medical facility’ and will miss FP3 and qualifying at the Monaco Grand Prix. The Ferrari chief, 58, underwent medical checks before a decision was made.
A statement from Ferrari said: “Fred Vasseur will not be present at the circuit today. Following some medical checks, Fred will remain under observation at a local medical facility.
“No further medical information will be provided. We wish Fred a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him back at the track soon.”
The team principal oversaw a promising Friday in Monte Carlo for Ferrari, with Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc topping the timesheets. The Italian team are favourites for success on the historic circuit, in a season where Mercedes have taken hope every win so far.
Vasseur had played down Ferrari’s pace on Friday evening, however. “It’s a very long way in Monaco from Friday, first to the Quali, then to the race,” he said.
“The most difficult [thing] is that you have to anticipate the evolution of the track, the evolution of the grip, and you have to be always one session ahead.
“This is a real challenge for the team and for the drivers. It means that it’s still a long way, and we’ll see tomorrow [Saturday] evening about the real pace.”
The weekend could see Hamilton vying for his first win in Ferrari colours. The seven-time world champion finished fastest in FP2 with the Prancing Horse proving to be best suited to Monaco’s slow corners.
“It’s been a positive day overall and the car felt quite good right from the first laps,” Hamilton said. “The team did a solid job with the changes we made between the two sessions and we were able to work through our programme without any major issues
“Monaco is always a very different challenge, with the bumps and the close proximity of the barriers, so it’s not easy to find the right balance and put everything together.
“There is still performance to be found and tonight we’ll focus on the details, because the margins are very small here and there’s plenty of work to do ahead of qualifying.”
