Press one button on your Wi-Fi router to get instant free broadband speed boost

It may sound ludicrously simple, but anyone suffering from dismal broadband speeds might want to press the power button on the rear of their Wi-Fi router. Yes, the old trick of switching things off and back on again can work wonders, and it only takes a matter of minutes. This latest tip comes via Virgin Media, who recently posted an update about Wi-Fi issues and broadband speeds.

“In most cases, you can make a few quick adjustments to improve the WiFi speed on your device,” the telecoms firm said.

“A quick reboot can clear temporary issues, refresh the connection, and help resolve slow speeds or dropouts.”

Routers can become clogged with digital data, and resetting these devices can ensure they are back up to full speed again. Think of it a bit like a phone or laptop, when these gadgets start playing up, most people restart them to try and fix any gremlins, and routers are no different.

Just remember that a full reboot can take up to 5 minutes, so make sure no one in the home is waiting to make a video call to the office or is in the middle of an important download.

Restarting the router isn’t the only option if you aren’t getting decent download speeds. Other top tips include moving closer to router when wanting the best speeds.

“Walls, furniture, and distance can weaken your WiFi signal,” Virgin explained.

“Sitting closer to the router often results in a faster and more stable connection.”

Other things to try include updating the WiFi drivers on your PC as outdated software can cause performance problems or connection issues. Virgin says it’s also a good idea to close unnecessary apps and background downloads.

Finally, disconnect unused devices such as phones, tablets and smart TVs that can be competing for bandwidth.

“These small tweaks take just a few minutes but can make a real difference to speed, reliability, and overall performance,” Virgin added.

Check your TV now, you could be making a very common mistake

There’s a huge week of football ahead with both Scotland and England getting their World Cup campaigns underway. First up, Scotland takes on Haiti tomorrow, June 14, and then England faces Croatia on Wednesday. If you’re now getting in the mood for some big match action, then make sure you check your TV today and avoid making some common mistakes.

According to the team at Hisense, there are some pretty easy errors that can affect the viewing experience when tuning into games from home. There are also some settings to check to make sure the image quality is at its best for the games.

“One of the most common mistakes people make when watching television, not just football, is leaving their TV in the same picture mode regardless of what they’re watching,” Tom Lord, TV Manager at Hisense explained.

“Different types of content benefit from different settings. Sport is particularly demanding because of the speed of movement on screen, and using the correct viewing mode can significantly improve the overall experience. Whilst many newer televisions now include AI-powered technology that can automatically analyse what’s being displayed and optimise picture settings accordingly. However, for viewers without these features, manually selecting the appropriate picture mode can make a noticeable difference.”

Along with checking the screen mode, there are some other things to watch out for. These include turning on certain motion settings – such as AI Smooth Motion and Motion Smoothing – which can reduce blur and make visuals appear more silky smooth.

Another good idea is to adjust the TV’s contrast to 80-90 percent. Hisense reckons this will distinguish players better in shaded areas on the pitch. Hisense also says it’s a good idea to tweak the brightness as well and always aim for around 50 percent, especially on LED TVs.

Picture settings aren’t the only factor that can impact match-day viewing; screen placement is also important. Positioning your television correctly helps minimise screen glare and ensures everyone can see the full screen clearly.

Finally, check the sound settings. Technologies such as Dolby Atmos and DTS can also help create a more immersive, multi-dimensional sound experience that places viewers at the centre of the action.

It’s worth trying all of these tips even if your TV is made by rival firms such as Sony, Samsung, LG or JVC.

Critical alert issued to all Windows users and you must restart your PC now

If you use a PC powered by Windows, you definitely need to head straight to your settings and download the very latest update from Microsoft. The US technology giant has just released its Patch Tuesday security updates, and it’s one of the biggest ever. In fact, this upgrade fixes a total of 206 flaws, with 32 of them being given a “critical” rating. If that wasn’t bad enough, a further three of these bugs are thought to be “zero-day” flaws, which means hackers already know about them and could attack PC owners in the future.

One of these issues is so serious that it could even allow cybercriminals to gain full control of a compromised system, putting personal data at risk. Another could allow an attacker with physical access to bypass BitLocker Device Encryption and gain access to encrypted data.

By installing the latest updates, devices will be protected from any attacks, which is why it’s vital to check settings without delay.

“This month’s Patch Tuesday fixes 206 security flaws in Microsoft software, making it the biggest Patch Tuesday release ever,” the security experts at Malwarebytes explained.

“The update includes 32 critical vulnerabilities, as well as three publicly disclosed zero-days. “Microsoft classifies these as zero-days because information about the vulnerabilities became public before patches were available.

“None are known to have been actively exploited by attackers.”

To check if your PC is ready for this vital upgrade, simply head to your settings and go to Windows Update.

Then check for any impending updates from Microsoft. If updates are found, they’ll start downloading automatically. Once complete, you’ll see a button that says Install or Restart now.

It’s then vital to follow that command and let your device reboot, as once things are fully updated, you’ll be protected from future issues.

“The huge number of fixed vulnerabilities makes this the largest Patch Tuesday since Microsoft launched the program in October 2003,” Malwarebytes added.

“The company introduced the monthly update schedule after the Blaster worm caused disruption in the early days of Windows.”

Those who buy one on launch day will be treated to a whopping £500 discount, which means this device can be bagged for £1499.99. Yes, that’s still ludicrously expensive, but it’s £300 cheaper than Samsung’s bendable phone.

The phone is powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor and features a massive 6660mAh Silicon-Carbon battery.

The device also supports impressive 80W Wired and 66W Wireless HONOR SuperCharge technology, alongside Wireless Reverse Charging.

On the rear case is a triple-lens camera system that features a main 50MP lens flanked by a 50MP ultrawide and a 64MP 3x optical telephoto lens. There’s plenty of AI baked in to help every snap look like it’s been shot by a pro.

The HONOR Magic V6 is usually priced at a whopping £1999.99.

This includes an Honor Choice Projector Air Pro (£249.99), Honor Choice Headphones Max – (£149.99) and Honor Choice Watch 2 Epic (£149.99).

“The industry needs the courage to evolve. Foldable users should never have to compromise between design, reliability, and performance,” said Roger Li, CEO of HONOR UK. “With the HONOR Magic V6, we focused on what truly matters: a natural form factor, trustworthy durability, and seamless cross-ecosystem productivity.
