Vicky Kaushal has been receiving huge praise for portraying the first Indian field Marshal Sam Manekshaw in a convincing manner. Apart from industry celebs, Sam Manekshaw’s daughter Maja Daruwala said to the Indian Express that she moved to tears after watching the film. She said at the event, “They have made the film to make the country proud of whatever it was. But, the time that I tear up, every time, I’ve seen the film twice now and I teared up both times, is the last two seconds of the film when you turn to the audience and you’re smiling. That just kills me every time.” The video was shared by a fan page on Twitter. Take a look:

Katrina Kaif also gave a shout out to Vicky’s performance. She wrote in an Instagram post,  “Maghna Gulzar, such a poetic beautiful classic film, was transported to another era .. you can see your passion to telling his story and attention to detail in every shot.”

She then went on to review her husband Vicky Kaushal’s performance and wrote, “And SAM !!!!…..GRACE, HEROISM , GRIT. What a performance, flawless, I’m just astounded , you are too inspiring , true to your craft in the most brilliant integral way , was so proud to watch you shine your way across the screen . I’ve seen you this last year pour yourself into this film and transform into sam. A performance to be remembered.” Take a look at the post here:

Sam Bahadur opened to stellar reviews. In his review for NDTV, film critic Saibal Chatterjee wrote, “One of the most striking aspects of Sam Bahadur is that it eschews flag-waving militarism while celebrating the bravery of India’s soldiers. It treads gently and thoughtfully through the life-threatening minefields that infantrymen have to negotiate in the line of duty. There are battle scenes and punchlines aplenty in the film, but they do not overshadow the less flashy components with which the lively biopic is constructed.”

‘Best comedy film ever’ streaming on Amazon Prime with ‘truly iconic performance’ | Films | Entertainment

It’s been called ‘arguably the funniest movie of the 90s’ and has since spawned what some describe as a cult, so beloved is the movie’s main character. As well as being a comedy, it is also a kidnap mystery (although nobody actually gets kidnapped).

The Big Lebowski was released in 1998 and directed by the legendary Coen brothers, who also directed Fargo, Miller’s Crossing and No Country For Old Men. The film gave us characters like Jeffrey ‘the Dude’ Lebowski (played by Jeff Bridges), Walter Sobchak (John Goodman), Donny Kerabatsos (Steve Buscemi) and Jesus Quintana (John Turturro).

The plot centres around a couple of hired thugs mistakenly attacking The Dude because they think he is a different Jeffrey Lebowski, a wealthier one whose wife owes them money. The Dude expects some sort of compensation from the “Big” Lebowski, especially because the thugs who rough him up also urinated on his favourite rug. He explains himself, saying: “Let me explain something to you. I am not Mr Lebowski. You’re Mr. Lebowski. I’m The Dude.”

From there, the film descends into chaos. Empire magazine ranked the film 45th in its list of the best films of all time, where it was the highest-ranked comedy film. Explaining its score, they said: “You’ve got to hand it to the Coen brothers. Not only did they make arguably the funniest movie of the 90s — which has since spawned a genuine film cult — they also managed to construct a kidnap mystery in which the detective isn’t a detective and nobody was actually kidnapped. With bowling, marmots and a urine-stained rug.”

However, Time Out listed the film 12th in its list of the 100 best comedy movies ever, saying Bridges put in “one of the truly iconic performances of all-time”. Films listed above it include Borat, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Airplane and This Is Spinal Tap.

The Big Lebowski has a rating of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and 8.1/10 on IMDB. USA Today called it “just one of the most original films ever made, perhaps the best world the Coens imagined and the one filled with its best characters”.

Adam Kempenaar, writing for Filmspotting, said: “25 years later, the movie where every detail matters and doesn’t matter at all, is as hilarious as ever – and more poignant, man.”

And Peter Travers, writing in Rolling Stone, said it was “hilarious”, adding: “The Big Lebowski is the best movie ever set mostly in a bowling alley.”

However, while the film has acquired an iconic status in the nearly-three decades since its release (fans literally show up to screenings and country-wide ‘Lebowski Fests’ wearing bathrobes and flip-flops in homage to The Dude), it was not a big success on its release. With a relatively small budget of $15 million, it grossed only $18 million at the box office in the USA and $46.7 million worldwide.

Explaining the possible reasons for its poor initial showing, Matthew Perino writes in MovieWeb that the film’s trailer was “all over the place” and “an incoherent mess that’s hard to follow and makes the movie look downright strange”. And he recalls how critics weren’t keen on the film when it came out.

One top critic called it “uninspired”, The Daily News criticised the story as “tired” and The Guardian called it “a bunch of ideas shoveled into a bag and allowed to spill out at random. The film is infuriating”.

However, it later acquired iconic status among film fans, who now argue over whether it is the Coen brothers’ best film. Although that’s not an easy debate to win given their films also include Fargo and No Country For Old Men, it shows how great The Big Lebowski really is.

‘Best’ war film of all time is available to stream on 2 platforms – not Netflix | Films | Entertainment

Forty years on from its release, war film Ran continues to prove popular among movie enthusiasts and is available on the British Film Institute’s streaming service as well as Amazon Prime Video.

The film, which has been labelled by Vulture as “the greatest war movie ever made” in its latest ranking, came out in 1985 and was years in the making.

Shakespeare’s King Lear tale is woven into the film’s story, which is inspired by the life of the 16th-century feudal ruler Mori Motonari.

Ran’s IMDb’s synopsis reads: “In Medieval Japan, an elderly warlord retires, handing over his empire to his three sons. However, he vastly underestimates how the new-found power will corrupt them and cause them to turn on each other…and him.”

It is a story of one man’s horrifying regret and his tragic end where a rush of reflection leads to humbling even the proudest of people.

The film stars Tatsuya Nakadai, Akira Terao, Jinpachi Nezu, Daisuke Ryû and was directed by Akira Kurosawa.

Kurosawa spent years developing the project and faced difficulty with funding it, which would then go on to become a big success and the most expensive Japanese movie ever made at that point.

As well as this, he faced issues with his eyesight and then during filming he lost his wife to cancer.

Kurosawa poured a huge amount of himself into the film and it became a massive technical accomplishment.

In Japanese, Ran is translated to Chaos and this film can certainly be described as that. The film features armies of extras, massive sets were burned to the ground to depict the happenings.

Ran also made it onto Esquire’s best war films ever made list and made it to number 19 on Rotten Tomatoes’ 100 Best War Movies of All Time with a 95% audience score.

It won an Academy Award for Best Costume Design in 1986 and picked up two BAFTA awards among many other accolades. it was even described as the “no doubt the best film of 1985” – high praise, indeed.

Ran is available on the BFI streaming platform and Amazon Prime Video – but Neflix fans will be left disappointed as it is not currently available on there.
