Sky Sports apologise after sweary Ferrari boss ‘tried all week to calm everyone down’ | F1 | Sport

Sky Sports were forced to apologise on Saturday afternoon following a sweary interview from Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur. The Frenchman was discussing the stress of being the Scuderia’s team principal at Monza during the Italian Grand Prix weekend.
When asked about the pressures of holding the Ferrari team principal on such a momentous weekend for the team, Vasseur told the Sky Sports presenters: “It’s quite emotional I tried all [of] the week to calm down everybody, to say ‘guys, we can’t score more points in Monza than somewhere else. Take it relatively easy and so.’
“But this is the bulls***. When you arrive on Thursday morning in Monza with all the guys in red and so, then you can feel it, you can feel the passion, the emotion, and for us we have to take it as a positive one to get an extra push.”
The Italian Grand Prix weekend is the biggest on the calendar for the Maranello-based team who, for the second year running, have produced a special one-off livery and race suit design to commemorate the weekend.

Vasseur had just watched his driver Carlos Sainz top the timing sheets in FP3 when he gave the interview with the Scuderia well-placed to battle Red Bull for pole position off the back of a strong start to their home race.
Speaking about Ferrari’s pace earlier in the weekend, Sainz explained: “It can’t get much better than that. It was a smooth day, to be honest. It’s great to be back at a track like Monza and from the first lap of FP1 to feel the car normal again after such a difficult weekend at Zandvoort.
“As soon as we put the car on track here for some reason it just adapted a lot better and it was a lot easier to set up and drive it per corner. It doesn’t mean that we’re going to be P1 tomorrow and in the race, but at least the feeling is much better.”
The 29-year-old went on to address Ferrari’s chances of victory in front of the home crowd, stating: “Yeah, dreaming is for free, no? This is one of my favourite sayings. Especially in tracks like this, I think we can all dream and it’s for free, no one can take it away from us.
“But being realistic, also looking at our race pace, that’s when we started seeing the true pace of the Red Bull, they were clearly again three-tenths, half a second ahead in race pace, and over 50 something laps that’s a lot of lap time.”
Sainz ended FP3 just under a tenth up on championship leader Max Verstappen, while Charles Leclerc finished the session in P4 following a couple of scrappy runs on the soft-compound tyre towards the end of his stint.

Tennis LIVE: Emma Raducanu romance rumours swirl as Andy Murray takes on brand new role | Tennis | Sport

Stefanos Tsitsipas has admitted that his relationship with dad Apostolos became ‘toxic’ while he was still part of his coaching set-up.
The pair went their separate ways last year, and Tsitsipas insists the decision has made a positive impact on their family dynamic.
“Our relationship has actually gotten better over the last couple of months,” he said. “It was very hard and difficult in the beginning when we split. It was very hard for him to accept that he’s not part of my inner circle anymore.
“It reached a point before where tennis got too much in the way. And, as bad as it sounds, I think it became even toxic in a way because I felt like he was constantly hunting.
“He’s still my father and he’s still someone that remains dear and close to me. He’s an amazing person in my life, because he’s done so many sacrifices, and he’s done so much work.”

Transfer news LIVE: Man Utd miss out on leading target as medical scheduled | Football | Sport

Wydad Casablanca president Hicham Ait-Menna has revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo rejected a transfer ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup.
The Al-Nassr striker received multiple offers for summer moves so that he could feature in the first edition of FIFA’s revamped tournament.
And Wydad Casablanca have emerged as one of the clubs that tried an audacious swoop for the five-time Ballon d’Or winner.
“I don’t know how the rumour spread,” Ait-Menna explained.
“But yes, I did reach out to one of his agents about three-and-a-half or four months ago, asking: ‘Would he want to play the Club World Cup?’ He replied, ‘Listen, I don’t think so.’”

Rory McIlroy launches club down fairway in disgust as US Open nightmare worsens | Golf | Sport

Rory McIlroy‘s anger boiled over after completely miscuing his second shot at Oakmont Country Club’s monster par-five 12th on Friday. The Northern Irishman was fighting to get back on the right side of the cut line at the supremely difficult host venue for this year’s US Open, but he could not slip into a productive rhythm and became increasingly frustrated as his second round wore on.
McIlroy has been on a worrying run of form since winning the Career Grand Slam and ending his long major drought at the Masters in April. He finished 14 shots behind winner Scottie Scheffler at the PGA Championship in May, missed the cut at the Canadian Open last week, and brought those struggles with him to Pennsylvania for the year’s third major.
The 36-year-old left himself with work to do after carding an four-over-par opening-round 74 on Thursday. And things continued to trend downward as he approached his second shot on the 647-yard 12th hole on Friday.
By that point, McIlroy had slipped to +8 – one shot behind the projected cut line at the time. He spied an inviting opportunity to get at least one shot back after leaving himself in position with a perfect tee shot.
As McIlroy stood over his second shot, Sky Sports commentator Paul McGinley said: “Has Rory got something special here? A big, high fade is what’s required to access this pin over on the back right-hand side.”
But what McIlroy delivered was the exact opposite as his long iron hooked violently to the left, landing in Oakmont’s notoriously thick rough. The five-time major winner only held his follow-through for a split second before furiously launching the club down the fairway.
And just like that, the opportunity to pull level with the projected cut line turned into a chance missed as McIlroy walked off with a par.
By that point in his round, McIlroy had slipped 11 shots behind joint-leaders J. J. Spaun and Sam Burns, and the chances of winning his second major of the season were all but gone.
When the last group of the day were through eight holes, only five players in the 156-strong field were under par for the tournament, and no bogey-free stars remained. Backmarker George Duangmanee showed just how brutal the course can be by racking up a huge score of +35 by the end of his first two rounds.
