A petition has been launched calling for the increase to be linked to the rise in pay for MPs.

The petition to Parliament states: “The triple lock for state pensions is being called unsustainable by some and so we believe a replacement is needed, and that it should be linked to pay increases for MPs.

“Many politicians are saying that the triple lock for state pensions is not affordable, so we believe this should be linked to the pay rises that are awarded to MPs.”

MPs had a 2.9 percent pay increase this past April when their salary increased from £84,144 a year to £86,584 a year.

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority chose this percentage increase as it was in line with the average increase in pay for public sector employees from the previous year.

This percentage increase is below the amount the state pension is expected to go up next year, as it is likely to increase 8.5 percent in line with the average rise in overall earnings, under

The petition has had just 35 signatures at the time of writing. If it reaches 10,000 signatures, the Government will have to issue a response and if it gets 100,000 signatures, the issue will be considered for debate in Parliament.

There have been reports ministers are considering reducing the state pension increase for next year by using the figure for the rise in average earnings not including bonuses, which would be 7.8 percent.

The full new state pension is currently £203.85 a week while the full basic state pension is £156.20 a week.

With an 8.5 percent increase, the full new state pension would go up to £221.20 a week while the full basic state pension would increase to £169.50.

Analysts have previously warned the triple lock could soon become unaffordable for the Government.

Neil Rayner, head of advice at True Potential, previously: “With longer-term issues plaguing the UK economy such as slowing economic growth and a falling birth rate, the triple lock may be unsustainable for the Government to afford in the long run, as those in retirement make up a larger proportion of the population.

“The Gen Z and Gen Alpha may face higher retirement ages and should ensure that they have a personal pension to augment their retirement – particularly if they want to retire before the state pension age.”

He encouraged Britons planning for their retirement to look at other sources of income as many people will “struggle” to get by relying solely on their state pension.
