Robbie Robertson, leader of the legendary group The Band and close collaborator to music giants including Bob Dylan, has died at the age of 80.

His management confirmed the news to Variety on Wednesday morning, stating he died in Los Angeles after a ‘long illness’.

Jaren Levine, Robertson’s manager for 34 years, stated the singer-songwriter was ‘surrounded by his family’ at the time of his death including his wife, Janet, his ex-wife Dominique, and his three children.

The star had recently completed work on his final project with long-time collaborator Martin Scorsese, working on upcoming film Killers Of The Flower Moon, which has already received Oscar buzz despite not even being released yet.

Robertson rose to prominence in the 70s alongside lifetime friend Bob Dylan, leading the Band during the singer’s often-debated ‘Dylan Goes Electric’ era in 1965.

In an interview with Variety two weeks before his death, Robertson reminisced on their longtime friendship and said: “We’ve been through it; we’ve been there and back. I am so proud of our friendship and our work. It’s been just a gift in life.”

The story of The Band was also central to the 2019 documentary Once Were Brothers.

Robertson’s most beloved tracks include The Weight, Up On Cripple Creek and The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Six Nations of the Grand River to support a new Woodland Cultural Center.

Andrea Bocelli sings Nessun Dorma in goosebump-inducing new video | Music | Entertainment

Andrea Bocelli has been performing for over 30 years and shows no sign of stopping. The 67-year-old Italian tenor recently had a concert in Mexico City’s main square, Zócalo, where he concluded as always with a sensational rendition of Nessun Dorma, which you can view below.

Nessun dorma!, which means “Let no one sleep” is an aria from the final act of Giacomo Puccini’s opera Turandot. The song is performed by the unknown prince character Calaf who falls in love at first sight with the Princess Turandot. To marry Turandot, Calaf must answer her three riddles correctly, but if he fails he will be beheaded. Nessun dorma! is the prince’s assertion that he will indeed triumph and wed the princess.

On the honour of performing in Mexico City, Bocelli shared on Instagram: “Singing in front of hundreds of thousands of people, in a square so rich in history and meaning for Mexico, was for me a rare and deeply moving privilege. A collective breath capable of transforming music into a true universal language. I would like to express my most heartfelt gratitude to the organisers, the institutions of Mexico City, @televisa_espectaculos, @bancoplata, @wme, @aegpresents, as well as to all the teams who contributed to making this memorable evening possible. To the Mexican audience and to the entire Latin community, with sincere affection: thank you for welcoming me, for your generosity, for your enthusiasm, and for the love you shared. A memory I will cherish forever.”

The Romanza – 30th Anniversary World Tour continues and tickets can be booked here.
