Tottenham news: James Maddison sets record straight on Harry Kane as Bayern pursue deal | Football | Sport

James Maddison wants “super professional” Harry Kane to stay at Tottenham as he is adamant the England captain is the best No.9 in world football. The Spurs playmaker is salivating at the prospect of joining forces with the 30-year-old frontman under Ange Postecoglou this season but Bayern Munich could yet wipe that dream from beneath his feet.
The Bundesliga giants are refusing to give up in their attempts to strike an agreement for top summer target Kane after their latest offer of £81.7million was rejected by Daniel Levy.
Bayern chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen and director Marco Neppe were in London for face-to-face negotiations with Levy on Monday but talks failed to bear fruit for the Bavarians, who are now set to table an improved proposal of £86m.
Maddison is cautiously optimistic Kane will remain in north London beyond the September 1 transfer deadline but is wary a deal could yet be struck.
Speaking at the TNT Sports start-of-season event in London, Maddison said: “I’d love Harry Kane to stay, he’s the best No.9 in the world in my opinion.
“What will be will be. Everyone knows what Harry is like, he’s a super professional guy and whenever he goes into training he gives 100 per cent. It’s the same with all the lads.”
The 26-year-old playmaker suggests Kane’s faultless application on the training pitch has prevented the saga from disrupting Tottenham’s plans for their Premier League opener at Brentford on August 13.
“No it hasn’t been a distraction to be fair,” Maddison said convincingly when quizzed on whether that was the case.
“I’m not going to go into detail about Harry Kane because one, I don’t know anything and two, let’s be respectful about Harry’s situation.
“We were friends before I joined Tottenham from the England squad.
“We have similar interests and we get on really well anyway away from football.”
Tottenham boss Postecoglou will be hopeful that the £40m arrival of Maddison, Spurs’ first natural creator since Christian Eriksen’s exit in January 2020, could help entice Kane to delay a potential departure after entering the final year of his contract.
Only Kevin De Bruyne and Trent Alexander-Arnold have created more chances than Maddison (347) in the Premier League since the beginning of the 2018/19 season.
If Kane is to remain with Tottenham, he is likely to profit from Maddison’s creativity, exceptional eye for a pass and dead-ball expertise as he continues to hunt down Alan Shearer’s all-time Premier League goalscoring record.
He is currently 47 goals shy of that feat and the quality of Maddison will undoubtedly bolster Kane’s impeccable output should the England duo remain fit.
Speaking during a separate interview during Spurs’ pre-season tour of Australia, Maddison quickly dismissed claims he could inherit the No.10 shirt from Kane if he was to depart, after wearing the No.71 jersey on his Tottenham debut against West Ham in Perth.
He said last month: “I just mentioned Harry and don’t really want to talk about that. Not sure what I should and shouldn’t say in response to that question.”

Ben Stokes punishment decided as England captain axed and replaced | Cricket | Sport

Ben Stokes has been dropped from the England squad for the second Test against New Zealand amid an ongoing investigation into a nightclub altercation. Reports emerged that the England captain was embroiled in a confrontation alongside Gus Atkinson, a security member and a Saracens rugby player.
An inquiry has been launched and, while that continues, the ECB have confirmed that Stokes has been relieved of the captaincy and removed from the squad. A statement on Wednesday read: “The England and Wales Cricket Board can confirm that, given the ongoing investigation, Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson have not been made available for selection for the Rothesay 2nd Test against New Zealand, which starts at the Kia Oval on Wednesday 17 June.
“Yorkshire batter Joe Root will lead the team as Interim Captain. Sussex fast bowler Jofra Archer and Essex batter Jordan Cox have been added to the squad.”

World Cup opening ceremony under threat and match at risk of being abandoned | Football | Sport

More than 10,000 security staff have been drafted in amid fears that mass protests could threaten the start of the World Cup. The 2026 tournament begins on Thursday, with co-hosts Mexico taking on South Africa at Mexico City’s Banorte Stadium, better known as the Azteca. And protestors have warned that ” the ball won’t roll” if their demands are not met.
A grand ceremony is planned to open the first 48-team World Cup in history. In a headache for organisers, the day will be accompanied by demonstrations by various groups. Teachers, farmers, transport workers and families of missing people will be part of at least six groups of demonstrators that will aim to bring the capital to a halt. Under mantras such as “If there’s no solution, the ball won’t roll,” the protesters want to bring their demands to the attention of an international audience and the thousands of tourists who will be in the country.
From Thursday morning, the groups plan to march and bike along main city routes before converging on the stadium at 1pm local time (6pm BST), when the opening ceremony is due to start.
Families of missing people are planning to form human chains near the stadium and hold a minute of silence for their loved ones. Teachers from the National Coordination of Education Workers (CNTE) union will attempt to block access to the FIFA Fan Fest and hold marches near major transport hubs.
In conjunction with the blockades near the stadium in the south of the city, a contingent of more than 100,000 teachers from the CNTE will maintain a presence in the city centre.
As a result, organisers have planned alternative routes to ensure both teams’ safe passage to the 87,000-capacity venue. As part of a mammoth operation, the Mexico City Government will reportedly deploy more than 10,000 security personnel around the stadium and the nearby hotel district.
Authorities have said that while they respect the right to protest, a mass blockade or sabotage of the opening event will not be permitted. Some of the protesters are demanding the scrapping of a government administrative body, the USICAMM, and the repeal of a law that has adversely affected state employees’ pensions.
Marches by the CNTE have already taken place this week, with union chiefs demanding immediate government action. Marcelino Rodarte, the Secretary General of Section 58 of the union, said: “On June 11, the ball won’t roll if there is no response for the organised teachers.
“For these people who, from the presidency, are now creating a huge distance, preferring to side with the powerful and wealthy rather than with the people. They cater to the bankers and business owners, but they don’t listen to the people.”
Mexico will host 13 matches during the World Cup, with Guadalajara and Monterrey also staging games. England could potentially play Mexico in Mexico City in the knockout stage if they win their group.

BBC may not recover from farce – don’t be shocked if Wimbledon ditch them next | Tennis | Sport

The BBC have big questions being asked of them. (Image: PA.)
Almost the entire tennis world was watching when Serena Williams made her long-awaited return to the court at Queen’s.
Except for those who tried to tune in on BBC Two.
Millions tuning in expected to witness a genuine sporting piece of history: a 23-time Grand Slam champion, arguably the greatest female player of all time, making her comeback on British soil.
Instead, they got a repeat of Richard Osman’s House of Games.
Now, this is no criticism of Osman, who is one of the country’s most talented broadcasters. But when one of the biggest names in world sport returns to action and the BBC decides a daytime repeat deserves priority, something has gone badly wrong.
Williams chose Britain for her comeback. She chose Queen’s. By extension, she chose the BBC.
The corporation repaid that faith by showing only the opening exchanges before quietly shunting the match online.
For tennis fans, it felt like yet another reminder that the BBC no longer views live sport as a priority.
And that’s becoming a serious problem.
The decision looked even worse given that Emma Raducanu and Katie Boulter were also playing doubles together at the same time. Yet viewers hoping to watch Britain’s biggest tennis stars were denied, as the match was not even shown on iPlayer.
This wasn’t simply poor scheduling.
BBC director of sport Alex Kay-Jelski effectively admitted as much earlier this year when he argued that broadcasting live sport is no longer essential for the corporation’s relevance.
“You can still be relevant, you can still matter if you don’t show the sport,” he said.
That philosophy is now becoming impossible to ignore.
For decades, live sport was one of the BBC’s greatest strengths and one of the reasons millions happily paid the licence fee.
The BBC was where the nation gathered.
The signs have been there for years.
Coverage of the Winter Olympics attracted widespread criticism. Even BBC commentator John Hunt publicly expressed frustration when viewers missed the start of Team GB’s gold medal-winning skeleton run.
Many simply switched to TNT Sports.

This summer’s World Cup only reinforces the trend. The BBC won’t even have a studio presence in the United States until the knockout stages, while viewers won’t get a traditional morning highlights programme either.
Elsewhere, the retreat continues.
For the first time since the 1950s, the BBC will have no rights whatsoever to the Commonwealth Games.
The Boat Race has gone to Channel 4.
The Paralympics went years ago.
So did exclusive Formula One coverage.
Even Wimbledon highlights are no longer exclusively theirs.
Bit by bit, the BBC’s sporting empire has been shrinking.
Which raises an uncomfortable question.
Could Wimbledon eventually decide enough is enough?

The prospect may sound unthinkable today, but it is no longer impossible.
The Times reported earlier this year that All England Club chiefs want significant improvements to the BBC’s coverage when the next broadcast agreement begins after the 2027 Championships.
Behind the scenes, there is reportedly concern that the presentation has become stale, predictable and increasingly disconnected from modern audiences.
If that assessment is correct, why would tennis administrators ignore what happened at Queen’s this week?
The BBC still offers prestige.
It still offers a unique place in British sporting culture.
But prestige alone won’t be enough forever.
The uncomfortable reality for the corporation is that rivals are improving.
TNT Sports earned widespread praise for its French Open coverage.
Laura Robson has emerged as one of the most impressive presenters in British sport for TNT and Sky.
Production standards continue to rise.
And unlike the BBC, these broadcasters appear desperate to convince viewers that sport matters.
Wimbledon is not driven by television money in the same way many sporting events are.
The All England Club will do what it believes is best for the tournament.
If BBC executives think their relationship with Britain’s most iconic sporting event is untouchable, they may want to think again.
Because what happened at Queen’s was about far more than Serena Williams.
It exposed a growing concern within tennis that the sport is becoming an afterthought at the BBC.
And if that perception continues to spread, Wimbledon will eventually start asking difficult questions.
