Gold prices have fallen again in Bangladesh’s local market, with the Bangladesh Jewellers Association (Bajus) cutting the price of the best-quality 22-carat gold ornaments by Tk1,108 per bhori, bringing it down to Tk234,038.

The new rate came into effect this (8 September) morning.

Bajus said the price adjustment followed a drop in the price of gold bullion in the local market.

The decision was taken at a meeting of Bajus’s Standing Committee on Pricing and Price Monitoring.

The price of 21-carat gold ornaments was reduced by Tk1,049 per bhori to Tk223,541, while 18-carat gold ornaments now cost Tk191,931 per bhori, down Tk933.

The price of traditional-method (Sanatan) gold ornaments was also cut by Tk700 per bhori, bringing the new price to Tk156,822.

This is the second price cut in a row. Bajus had earlier reduced gold prices on 6 September when the price of 22-carat gold was cut by Tk2,216 per bhori to Tk235,146.

At the time, the price of 21-carat gold was reduced by Tk2,100 to Tk224,590, 18-carat gold by Tk1,750 to Tk192,864, and Sanatan gold by Tk1,458 to Tk157,522.

Taken together, the two rounds of price cuts on 6 September and today (9 September) have brought down the price of 22-carat gold ornaments by a total of Tk3,324 per bhori.

Despite the fall in gold prices, silver prices remain unchanged. The price of 22-carat silver ornaments, including VAT, stands at Tk5,132 per bhori.

The price of 21-carat silver is set at Tk4,957, 18-carat at Tk4,257, and Sanatan silver at Tk3,208 per bhori.

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan are surprised by a letter sent on behalf of King Charles clarifying that they were no longer working members of the royal family and that they would remain private citizens, their spokesperson said.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and their two children returned to live in Britain last month, six years after stepping down from royal duties and moving to the US during a period of estrangement and awkward relations with the royal family.

The return was a surprise even to close family with Harry’s father, the king, only being told days before the news became public.

In a letter, authorised by Charles and sent to senior British officials on Monday (7 September), it was made clear that Harry and Meghan were no longer working members of the royal family.

A spokesperson for the couple said they had only been informed shortly before it was sent out and they were surprised by what had occurred.

The letter said their status, which was originally agreed with the late Queen Elizabeth in 2020, gave the couple personal latitude “in respect of financial independence and protection of their privacy as they would wish”.

“It follows that there is no change to the current status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. … The charitable work of the Duke and Duchess is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity,” it said.

“In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.”

Since leaving for the US, the couple have continued to make the headlines as Harry accused the royals of neglect, the tabloid press of ruining his life and the government of failing to provide automatic police protection which would allow him to return home.

A committee which decides on what level of security he should be afforded at public expense is due to meet this week to decide what protection he should have now his family have returned to Britain.

They have also struck a number of commercial deals, most notably with streaming giant Netflix, while Meghan has launched a lifestyle brand As Ever.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) government has no information indicating that former inspector general of police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed has left the country, Foreign Affairs State Minister Humaiun Kobir told parliament yesterday (8 September).

He made the remarks in response to a notice from Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem seeking details of the government’s efforts to extradite Benazir.

Under Rule 147(1), Mir Ahmad referred to a media report claiming that Benazir had secured bail in Dubai and subsequently travelled to Saint Lucia.

In response, Humaiun said the government had verified the report with officials of the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“We verified the matter with officials of the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They said they were not aware of any such incident,” he said.

The state minister said this suggests that Benazir may still be in the UAE.

He said the UAE considers extradition requests on a case-by-case basis and that Bangladesh would continue diplomatic efforts to bring the former IGP back to the country.

“For this, everyone needs to remain united,” he said.
