Warning to all Samsung, LG and Sony TV users – check your settings now

If you have a smart TV in your living you might be blissfully unaware of the data that it’s gathering on you. The consumer team at Which? have just released a worrying report that reveals just what some of us hand over to tech giants and your television is just one gadget that appears to be watching you as you watch it.
“Most smart TV menus are now flooded with adverts, some personalised based on user data,” the consumer group explained. “While tracking is optional, Which? has found that LG, Samsung and Sony bundle this up into an ‘accept all’ button, rather than encouraging customers to review a full list of tracking options and then accept or decline which ones they want.”
Of course, tracking can help serve up things that are more interesting to you but anyone worried about privacy concerns might want to dig into the settings and make some changes.
As we mentioned previously, TVs are just the tip of the iceberg with other devices such as video doorbells and boom boxes sending data to tech and social media giants.

Which? Says it found that Bose speakers share user data with Meta (Facebook‘s owners) and Ezviz cameras, which are sold in stores such as Argos, are linked with social platforms such as TikTok.
In fact, Every single smart camera and doorbell brand Which? assessed used tracking services from Google, while Blink and Ring also connected to parent company Amazon. Even more concerning is that Google’s Nest product demands full name, email, date of birth and gender.
Bizarrely, the amount of things sent to firms can also be down to the smartphone you own. Researchers say they found a stark difference in the volume of data requested by smart speakers if users own an Android phone versus an Apple iOS device. For example, Google Nest products request contacts and location on Android, but neither on Apple’s iOS. The app functions the same on both, so the additional data collected on Android does not appear to be essential.
Many of us appear to have little idea about what is happening to our data with a third of the Which? members surveyed admitted to not reading any of the privacy policy when downloading an app, while two thirds said that they merely skimmed it.
Speaking about the research, Rocio Concha, Which? Director of Policy and Advocacy, said: “Consumers have already paid for smart products, in some cases thousands of pounds, so it is excessive that they have to continue to ‘pay’ with their personal information.
“Firms should not collect more data than they need to provide the service that’s on offer, particularly if they are going to bury this important information in lengthy terms and conditions.
“The ICO should consider updating guidelines to better protect consumers from accidentally giving up huge swathes of their own data without realising.”

Sony is back with new WH-1000XM6 heaphones that sound impressive

Sony has a very long tradition of making excellent wireless headphones. The Japanese firm’s WH-1000XM4s (launched in 2020) are still much-loved by those who own them. The award-winning WH-1000XM5s (which arrived in 2022) then refined the experience further, adding better sound and a new look. Now, there are some new cans to choose from, and they appear even more impressive than anything Sony has launched before.
Unsurprisingly, they are called the Sony WH-1000XM6, and they look set to improve on what were already some of the best headphones money could buy.
Firstly, Sony says its Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) is now its most “advanced” yet, meaning owners should only hear the music and not annoying background sound.
This has been achieved thanks to an advanced processor and 12 clever microphones that are dotted all over the headphones. Hopefully, this update means you can still enjoy a podcast when sitting in a noisy cafe or having a screaming baby near you on a plane.
When you don’t want ANC, you can tap a button on the side to let audio in or simply place your hand over the ear cup to hear what’s going on around you. That’s perfect for those times when you walk into a coffee shop to order a latte and don’t want to take them off.
Next, there’s improved audio with Sony saying the upgraded sound has been developed in collaboration with world-renowned mastering engineers. The collaborative team of Grammy-winning and Grammy-nominated engineers includes Randy Merrill (Sterling Sound), who has worked with the likes of Ed Sheeran; Chris Gehringer (Sterling Sound), known for his work with Lady Gaga and Mike Piacentini (Battery Studios), who has mastered tracks for Bob Dylan.
To help boost things further, the new WH-1000XM6 also supports the best formats, including High-Resolution Audio and High-Resolution Audio Wireless. Plus, there’s DSEE Extreme, which upscales compressed digital music files in real time to restore high-range sound lost in compression.
If you don’t like what you are hearing, all the settings can be adjusted in the Sony Connect app with the WH-1000XM6 even featuring a 10-band EQ for the ultimate precision.
Of course, many of us now use headphones for videos as well as music. To help make a boxset binge feel more immersive, 360 Reality Audio Upmix for Cinema has been added, which brings a spatial sound experience just like you are in a movie theatre.
Along with sounding great, another vital feature of headphones is the way they look and feel.
Sony has refined things again this year with the WH-1000XM6, which features a soft-fit wider headband infused with vegan leather and earpads designed for all-day usage. They also fold up neatly like origami and can be popped into their carry case.
At launch, you’ll find three colours including Black, Platinum Silver and Midnight Blue.
Other extras worth a mention include long battery life, fast charging, improved voice calls and Scene-based Listening.
This new intuitive feature uses sensing technology to automatically play music according to your activity and adjust noise cancellation level based on your environment
They sound pretty mighty, but so does the price. They cost £400, which is pretty expensive, especially as you can currently get the older WH-1000xm5s for just £279.
“Sony today announced the WH-1000XM6 wireless noise cancelling headphones – latest edition of its award winning 1000X series that set a new standard for premium audio and personal listening experiences,” Sony explained in an email sent to Express.co.uk.
“Building on the legacy of the 1000X series, this latest model combines premium sound with the best noise cancelling1 in a seamless design to create an unparalleled audio solution for music lovers, fashionistas, travellers and professionals alike.”

Freeview users must follow vital TV advice this week – ‘please don’t’ ignore it

Millions of Freeview users across the UK are facing a week of disruption that could leave some facing a blank screen or pixelated images when trying to watch their favourite shows. The annoying issues are being caused due to important engineering work taking place with areas across the whole of Britain currently affected.
“Sometimes engineering work is required on transmitters so that they can keep reliably broadcasting your favourite free-to-air programmes,” Freeview explained in an update on its website.
The update started on May 12, with possible side effects on TV reception expected to last throughout the week.
If you are suddenly finding that your picture isn’t as clear as usual, then one thing you must not do is start tinkering with the settings with Freeview, simply saying, “please don’t”.
In an alert, the team behind the free-to-view platform said, “If you are affected by engineering work, please don’t try and retune your TV – reception will be restored as soon as the engineering work is completed.”
Over 100 areas could see signal issues including Keswick, Jedburgh, Kendal, Sutton Coldfield, Blackburn, Guildford, Crystal Palace, Dover, Salisbury and Sheffield.
You can see the full list here.
These are two of the main issue currently affecting TVs.
• Pixelation or flickering on some or all channels
• Screen may go black on some or all channels
If the problems are giving you nightmares then you can try tuning into contnet via Freeview Play instead.
This service uses the internet instead of an aerial and isn’t affected by the current transmitter upgrades.
Now might also be a good time to look at Freely.
This new platform, which is actually owned by Freeview also offers full access to live and on-demand content using broadband.
It is built into numerous new TVs and offers features such as recommendations, a full TV guide, and the option to pause and rewind live TV.
It’s also just had an upgrade with users now able to access content already aired via a Backwards TV Guide function and My List. For the first time on Freely, users can now save up to 50 favourite shows from the UK’s biggest free-to-air broadcasters – all in one place

Critical update alert for all Windows 10 and Windows 11 users – check

If you have a Windows 10 or Windows 11-powered PC in your home, then you’d be wise to check the settings without delay. Microsoft has just pushed out a major update as part of its Patch Tuesday programme and it’s not something you want to ignore. In fact, this latest upgrade from the Redmond firm fixes a total of 72 flaws within its popular operating systems.
If that wasn’t bad enough, it’s been confirmed that six of the bugs have been deemed ‘critical’ and given the dreaded ‘zero-day’ rating.
For those not in the know, ‘zero-day’ basically means hackers are aware of the gremlins and are actively exploiting them in the wild.
That’s why Microsoft has rushed so quickly to fix the problems in a bid to keep people safe.
The bugs include Privilege Vulnerabilities, Bypass Vulnerabilities and Spoofing Vulnerabilities, and it’s not vital that you check your PC is running the very latest version of Windows 10 or Windows 11 without delay.
Explaining more, the security team at Action1 said: “Attackers exploiting these vulnerabilities can escalate privileges to system level, granting them full control to run arbitrary code, install malware, modify data or disable security protections.
“With low complexity and minimal privileges needed, these flaws pose a serious risk, especially given the confirmed in-the-wild.”
To check your PC is up to date, head to Settings, navigate to Update & Security, then Windows Update, and select “Check for updates”
This new patch offers a glimpse into why Windows 10 users should consider switching to Windows 11.
From October, free updates like the one released this week will no longer be available, and that will put Windows 10 users at much higher risk of issues and cyber attacks.
“Starting Oct. 14, 2025, Windows 10 will no longer receive security updates,” explained Yusuf Mehdi, Executive Vice President, Consumer Chief Marketing Officer.
“As security threats evolve and adapt, so must our operating systems and hardware. Because of this, we designed Windows 11 to be the most secure version of Windows ever — by default and design — to help you stay ahead of those risks.”
