Woody Allen booed at Venice premiere as protesters chant ‘no rape culture’ | Films | Entertainment

Woody Allen arrived at the Venice Film Festival last night for the premiere of his new and possibly final movie Coup De Chance.

The controversial 87-year-old filmmaker was accompanied by his 52-year-old wife Soon-Yi Previn and their adopted daughters, where they were met by protesters.

Previn is the adopted daughter of Allen’s ex-girlfriend Mia Farrow, who he was with for 13 years from 1979.

That was until he was caught having an affair with Previn when he was 55 and she was 21.

Over the last few years Allen has proven to be divisive in Hollywood circles because of allegations that he sexually assaulted Dylan, his adopted child with Farrow in the 1990s, which he strongly denies.

Shunned by Hollywood since the MeToo movement began, Allen is more popular in Europe now with Coup De Chance being his first film entirely in French.

Arriving at the Venice Film Festival, the 87-year-old was met with boos and protesters chanting “no rape culture” as scuffles between them and security broke out with a number trying to get onto the red carpet.

Nevertheless, the filmmaker ended up getting a standing ovation from journalists during a press conference.

Asked by Variety what his response was to Dylan’s accusations that he sexually abused her, Allen said: “My reaction has always been the same. The situation has been investigated by two people, two major bodies, not people, but two major investigative bodies. And both, after long detailed investigations, concluded there was no merit to these charges, that, you know, is exactly as I wrote in my book, Apropos of Nothing. There was nothing to it.”

Asked if he felt cancelled, Allen said: “I feel if you’re going to be cancelled, this is the culture to be cancelled by. I just find that all so silly. I don’t think about it. I don’t know what it means to be cancelled.

“I know that over the years everything has been the same for me. I make my movies. What has changed is the presentation of the films. You know, I work and it’s the same routine for me.

“I write the script, raise the money, make the film, shoot it, edit it, it comes out. The difference is not from cancel culture. The difference is the way they present the films. It’s that that’s the big change.”

‘Masterpiece’ Amazon Prime war film discovered by fans: ‘Must watch!’ | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Amazon Prime viewers are discovering a hidden war film that needs to be seen. A Call to Spy, released in 2019, tells the story of Winston Churchill’s Special Operations Executive – the SOE.

The film unveils the secret exploits of a group of heroic women, trained as spies during World War II, who played a critical role in the conflict against the Nazis. With minimal preparation and enormous pressure riding on them, these newly initiated covert operatives were relied on to help beat the enemy.

The story is told through the perspective of “spymistress” Vera Atkins, a real-life German-Jewish Romanian, who was part of the team who evacuated Poland’s Enigma code breakers.

Portrayed by Stana Katić, Vera’s journey is documented from how she was inducted into the SEO and how she helped the British and their allies undermine the Nazi regime in France, with some help.

Vera recruits two unusual candidates, Virginia Hall (Sarah Megan Thomas), an ambitious American with a wooden leg, and Noor Inayat Khan (Radhika Apte), an Indian Muslim pacifist.

The cast also features Linus Roache as Maurice Buckmaster, an intelligence officer who aided the women in the group.

The synopsis reads: “During World War II, the British prime minister instates a spy agency to undermine the Nazis. In a desperate attempt to gain leverage, they hire women as spies, who leave a powerful legacy behind.”

Fans have expressed their admiration for the film on X, branding it a “masterpiece” that must be watched.

One wrote: “A Call To Spy on Amazon Prime is worth a watch. Splendid Plot & Acting by the actresses. Based on a true story of an American, differently abled citizen (including Radhika Apte) turned spy, sent by Churchill and saved France from Hitler’s atrocities.”

“A Call To Spy is such a masterpiece!,” declared a second.

A Call to Spy That movie is brilliant and I can’t wait to rewatch it again! Uhhh and it makes it way easier to annoy and convince my friends to watch this masterpiece,” penned another viewer as a fourth echoed: ” A call to spy on amazon prime – must watch

Another chimed in: “A call to spy on amazon prime – must watch,” as someone else agreed: “Just finished watching A Call To Spy on Amazon about the women of the SOE, well worth watching, really enjoyed it.”

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk in 2020, Linus praised the real-life women in the SOE in the 1930s. With sincere admiration, he commented: “We’ve all heard the stories about the male heroes – but we’ve not heard much about these women who put themselves directly on the line without much training.”

Amazon adds ‘mind blowing’ action thriller | Films | Entertainment

CHANNEL TODAY BROADCASTING CORPORATION

Amazon Prime has discreetly added what’s being hailed as a ‘mind blowing’ action thriller that is the lead actor’s ‘best movie yet’.

The streaming behemoth has exclusively launched A Working Man on its platform.

Until now, the film had only been shown in US cinemas, allowing UK fans to finally see what all the hype is about.

In the film, Jason Statham portrays Levon Cade, a man who left a distinguished military career in black ops to lead a simple life in construction.

However, when his boss’s daughter is kidnapped by human traffickers, his quest to bring her home reveals a world of corruption far beyond anything he could have anticipated.

A Working Man sees Statham reunite with writer-director David Ayer. This is their follow-up to the unexpected hit The Beekeeper, which was released in 2024.

Ayer also penned Training Day and the original The Fast and the Furious, as well as directing End of Watch, Fury and Suicide Squad in 2016, reports Surrey Live.

Statham is joined by Marvel stars David Harbour and Michael Pena in the cast. British actor Jason Flemyng, known for his roles in Black Mirror and The Missing, also stars.

Despite receiving a lowly 49% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film wasn’t particularly well received by critics. Nonetheless, there are plenty of fans who disagree with that judgement and have singled out the film for high praise.

It appears there are ample reasons for Amazon Prime subscribers to check out the title for themselves.

One viewer shared online: “A Working Man is an absolute blast from start to finish! This is action cinema done right-fast-paced, thrilling, and packed with intense fight sequences that keep you on the edge of your seat. Jason Statham once again proves why he’s one of the best in the genre, delivering a performance that’s equal parts ruthless and charismatic.”

Another chimed in: “Mind-blowing action movie. This movie blew away my mind with its high-octane action sequences featuring Jason Statham in his usual no nonsense and serious action skills. Right from the start to the end, the movie gives goosebumps. And the action sequences are just top notch.”

Meanwhile, another simply posted: “One of Jason Statham’s best movies yet. A great plot that dealt very truthfully about the issue of how bad human trafficking and how it hurts people and the sleaze associated with it.”

However, not everyone was completely satisfied; some felt the storyline didn’t match up to the stunts. A critic pointed out: “A mashup of Taken and The Equalizer with an ex military badass who reverts to his skills to track down a missing girl. Statham’s action scenes were pretty awesome as usual, but the plot was unoriginal.”

The film has certainly divided opinion, with some viewers not quite taken by its style. One viewer remarked: “Seems like they were going for a John Wick vibe, but this was bad. Very bad. Like I wasn’t expecting a masterpiece by any means from another boilerplate Jason Statham action movie, but this was so bad. And I say this as someone who loves a good predictable action movie. I enjoyed the Beekeeper for example. That was a lot better than this.”

Their critique didn’t end there, as they added: “This movie felt almost like if you asked AI to make a generic Jason Statham action movie. Looks like they were attempting to set up a potential sequel near the end. Please don’t.”

A Working Man is streaming on Amazon Prime.
